Carbon arrows...is this right?
« on: December 03, 2009, 04:36:00 PM »
Well after struggling very much moving from a recurve to now a longbow, I have good arrow flight and my groups are tighter. The idea that I shoot a 61# at 30 Reflex/deflex longbow with Heritage 250s cut to 31 inches well is exciting. What is quite odd to me is the weight I had to add on the front to get them to fly well and bare-shaft well. See if this sounds right to you: 100 grain brass insert, 250 grain head with a total arrow weight at 740 grains with a FOC around 21%. I love the heavy arrow and FOC but my goodness it seems like alot. What do you guys think?

The weight is a bonus for me I like heavy arrows,  As long as they hit where you look.  Now if I could only look at the right spot...

One of my bows is almost identical to yours and man it shoots darts. I like to hunt with that bow in places where my shots are short and the woods are thick. I killed my first trad kill 2 weeks ago with close to the same set-up.

That sounds great!!  You could probably tinker a bit more and get more FOC without adding any more weight.  Get all you can.  The latest research shows the more FOC the better.

Dr. Ed's latest documentation has to do with the natives there in Aussie land.  They use extremely heavy arrows and up to 40+% FOC with no fletching.  They depend on this for a living.  It must be the best.

Wapiti,  my Shrew is 48# at my 27" draw and I'm using the Beman Classic 500's cut to 30" with 100gr. insert and 200gr. points and they are still a little stiff.  I'm gonna try some 250gr. heads and see if that works.
