Deer season is over, now what?

I saw a lot of deer in range this year but never got one broadside so I didn't even take a shot. I am going to try some slightly different stand placement next year to get those broadside shots. So, I will spend some time in the deer woods looking to make some slight changes in stand placement. I'll hunt antler shed in the winter too.

I will also get out about once a week with my Brittany to go quail hunting with my side-by-side shotgun. That's fun and quail is good to eat.

Than there will be a spring bow hunting trip for hogs. The shooting practice for that will keep me pretty occupied until I go.

Then a few 3-D shoots over the summer and fall will be here again.

I can't imagine someone not hunting small game with the bow, or shooting stumps.  It just don't make sense 8^).

January will be getting the dog out after ducks.  Of course the ducks are pretty much gone, but he likes it.

You guys further north must have bunnies on a different cycle than down here........I have seen a grand total of one......one....this year!  And that was walking back from a treestand this fall.  We saw none this year around the yard or garden, when we are usually overrun with the critters.  Got to be some sort of down cycle.  Either that or the raptors are really having a field day with them......it's just of opposite with squirrels.....have not seen this many in many, many years.  Mother Nature hard at work!!!

Regardless, like everyone recommends....small game and stumps (but small game is lots more fun and delicious to boot).

we still got till jan 2 on deer but lots of squirrels and crows and rabbits and mice and coons and possums and groundhogs till seson comes back in for deer bear turkey !
 stumps have overpopulated in this area also i think driving out the phesant population so they are fair game! and the errant leaf, can never tell when one may go bad on ya and have to be stuck!

Even for those who don't fancy themselves as writers, I can tell you most state bowhunting associations are in dire need of stories for their newsletters, successful or otherwise.  You can help make those state editors' jobs easier by penning something and attaching a few photos and sending it off to them.  Don't worry that you're not Hemmingway (or Don Thomas, etc.); most editors are used to cleaning them up a bit.

We have a archery shop that sets up a 3D shoot beging January they have 15 targets 10 to 40 yards three days for the wheels and 15 targets 10 to 25 yards for us one day twice around for about three months . Always a good time to hear all the storys from that season !!

Deer season never ends, only harvest dates do. Post season is the best time to scout. If you bump deer now, it's no big deal.
You can find the heaviest travel area's, slip into bedding area's, look for sheds, etc.
This is also a great time to start planning and building natural ground blinds. If you cut pines to use for blind material, they slide nice on snow.
It's also chainsaw/deer habitat improvement season. You can do hinge cuts and create some great bedding area's out of otherwise poor habitat.
And as always, practice shooting and hit the occasional sport show. A great trad bow expo is in Kalamazoo Michigan in late Jan.

I'm hunting deer up here in Dutchess and Putnam Co. 'til Tuesday sunset, then off to Westchester 'til December 31st, then I go to Jersey the whole month of January. There's nothing like Winter bowhunting in the snow and the cold, still hunting mountain laurel ridges up high and frozen swamps down low.
And this year, for the first time ever, I've decided to try killing a coyote with my longbow. I spent all day today studying their track and routes in the snow. I got 'til March 28th to kill one.
We are just gettin' waaaarmed up!
