Collars for Carbon arrows
« on: December 20, 2009, 11:16:00 AM »
Well another thread got me thinking, I busted to many arrows this year shooting at squirrels etc... I shoot CX Heritage 150's and was wanting to make a collar for them out of old aluminum arrows. Anybody have an idea which size aluminum arrow would work best for this as far as fit and strength?

Thanks!

I don't use carbon, but I have some old aluminums that are too big for my bows that may work, once you find out the size you need.

I believe it's a 2216 for the 150 and 250.

Carbon arrows are cool and kinda strong although they are (weak) on the ends. I sleeve my Carbon Express shafts with a 2" length 2216 in the front AND back. Almost makes 'em bomb proof.

If I use a bit of arrow wrap on the shaft the 2216 holds tight. Did The Muzzy Shoot one year with the same three arrows. Just had to replace some nocks. That was cool.

* Oh Yea... An aluminum sleeve MAY NOT fit over a brass insert. Learned that the hard way.

In the How To section there should be a chart giving shaft sizes.

I'm not sure how critical length is but I use an inch.I chucked the piece in a drill press and used my broadhead file to bevel the rear edge.Someone talked about using a reloader's case trimmer for that.

Lightly sand the end of the shaft and install with a good epoxy. If your aluminum shaft section is to narrow to slide over the lip of your insert, you may have to install the aluminum section first, then the insert.

While you are at it,take the time to put a small,1/4"-1/2" piece on the nock end of the shaft.

I use a 2117 on my CE 150's.  Made a video to show how I do this.

Use a "rat tail" or chainsaw file to rough up the inside of the allum. footing and clean, this is where they sometimes "let go" just my 2c worth. cheers Pete.

I've got a bunch of 2212's that I cut off and wonder if these will fit the CE Heritage 250's?

Snag the outside dia. of a 250 I beleive is .306 and it looks like the I.D. of a 2212 is going to be around .322 I don'r think they will work. Also Feliciano it won't change your spine I did a test by sliding a aluminum over a carbon arrow one inch at a time and checking it on the spine tester I went to eight inches before the spine started to go up.

Is the chart that folks have been referring to.

Good luck!
