work trip turns into deer meat
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:06:00 AM »
My friend Jet and I ran down today to pick up our 3d targets that we had set up when Rick Welch came down a couple of weeks back. We got the stuff up and decided that since we were there anyway, we might as well get in a stand till dark.

I got settled in at 3:25. at 3:57 I spotted a deer about 60yds behind me. It never came in. At 4:25 I saw a big doe comming from behind me. she came under my tree and gave me a broadside shot at 18yds. Problem was , there was a small tree blocking out the 12 ring. another deer came in and smelled me I think and blew out of there taking the doe along with it.

At 5:oo I decided to give it 15 more min and get down and pull the stand.(we are headed south to our pig camp and not planning to hunt here anymore this year). about that time I saw a deer out in front of me. It came in and milled around and when it dropped it's head, I dropped the string of my dakota recurve. It ran out and I thought I heard it crash. I could see the arrow in the ground. Got down and confirmed what I thought to be a good hit. Snuck out and met up with Jet. We loaded our targets and the Stealth on the trailer and went back to where I shot the deer. His dog Mason ran in and found it. 40 yards from my arrow. A nice button buck and my first this year with my pig bow. Dakota by Rick Welch, 59@28, abowyer brown bear head. 459gn arrow. complete pass though and massive blood trail. sorry about the pic but we were in a hurry by the time we got home. Don

Congrats, buddy. You deserve it - after all, you work for a living and can't get out just any old time. I didn't see any Mon. night at Don's, and opted to skip Tues., & go tonight (Wed.) (hope I didn't miss their "walkin' window" - LOL)

Thanks guys, what I was impressed the most about, is how quick this deer went down. I truley believe that it was because of how sharp the broadhead was. I use to hit em with a file till they would shave hair on my arm. Now , with the help of Ron at kme and Joey Buchanan, and king wouldbe, I can get these babies just plane scary. The arrow I shot this deer with, was at least 6" in the dirt and when I pulled it out and washed it off, It was still sharper than I use to hunt with. Merry Christmas. Don
