I drill a hole in the riser and insert a 1/8" brass rod in it with CA glue and use the little hair tie rubber bands from the drugstore.
 Works great.

I do like Kris....here's a pic for you to see it.   It is real easy to do.

Sorry about the out of focus.  The rubber band is attached to brass rod on one end, and other end will pull of when the bow is drawn, freeing the arrow.   I usually flip it off with my finger, though, when I anticipate a shot.

So, with the toothpick thing, when you draw your bow, you lose the toothpick and rubber band?

All my hunting bows have the small pin glued in the back of the riser like Mark and SnS have.  Just simple and it surprises me that no(or very few) bowyers offer it.  I use a small piece of coat hanger but any pin material would work.

In theory that is the way it is supposed to work.  But I have found that often it doesn't  come off by itself and then it can mess up your shot.  So I either take it off and stick it in my pocket if I have time, or simply flick it off and let it drop.  I'm cheap, but even I can afford a few new ones every season!  ;)

I tried the rubber band toothpick method once. As I drew on a deer and the toothpick hit the forest floor the deer went on high alert from just that slight abnormal sound. Of course when you shoot at a Bama deer you have to shoot where they are going to be after the shot not where they are when you draw on them. They stay wired to the max.

I keep rubber bands in my day pack and just whittle my own toothpick.  Gives it that "traditional" look! lol

"Necessity is the mother of invention", don't know who said it, but here's credit for it.
Trad archers come up with some of the most innovative ideas, and most of them work.
I'm going to give the rubber band and tooth pick a try.
Thanks

I was wondering about it messing up the shot by tangling or not coming off.  I also wondered about the thing hitting the ground spooking the animal.  Good post.

I use a flipper rest cut the bottom so it sits  close to the shef about a 1/4" its holds the arrow in place and its just high enough to help the arrow clear the shelf.
