Who has CAMOED their bow? – I need Ideas!
« on: January 08, 2010, 06:05:00 PM »
My new Trad Tech Black Max limbs are …er.
BLACK!

I’d like to do some sort of camo job on them, but not sure what to do.  I could spray paint, but have little “artistic”skill.  Maybe some sort of stencils?

I want it to look nice, not just camo.

I thought of those “limbskins” thingy’s, but think that may be kind of “cheesy”.  Not sure?

I need ideas, and to see some nice homemade jobs.

Feedback and pics please..
Limbs and whole bows.

I like the "textured" spray paint by rustoleum.  I get it in gray and a sandy tan and spot over a bit of flat olive drab base.  Looks like crap, but took the shine off the limbs of my well used Black Widow (kind of wore off the original textured BW finish by carrying it for 15 years).  The plus side is you cant see the dings and scratches from pitching it out of trees and using it to pry apart barbed wire fences so well anymore!  Of course I'm more into usin' bows than lookin' bows.

I also like a shot of the textured on the handle - gives nice gription.

I did this after I got caught by a couple deer that I think saw the shine.  Same reason I wear a hat...to hide the shine.

i cut out some oak leaves and spray painted a pair of older zipper limbs(yes ,they are the only ugly zipper limbs in existance).if you take your time and plan it out the spray paint does o.k. but it is spray paint. camo dip looks great .

I've done a few for my friends & myself using spray paint. I used camo green (OD) & brown in the little cans, Bohning, I think it was, with real leaves as stencils. Hold the leaf by the stem against the limb & spray LIGHTLY. Repeat all over the limbs & riser, & use a new leaf when it gets so heavy with paint that it droops. I recommend practicing on some cardboard first (although I wasn't smart enough to think of that initially), & stay away from the grip. I also obviously wouldn't do this on a bow that had a lot of aesthetic value; I doubt it's removable without marring the finish.

I think that teh money spent on camo dip is well worth it.  I can build a pretty bow but don't ask me to paint anything except a barn.  And then you better not look that close.

Guys

Good ideas with the textured paints, and the "leaf" stencils.

I had forgotten about dipping.

Mike, the ILF riser I emailed you about yesterday,(when you get them on the market) if dipped, and my limbs dipped to match would be "sweet".

John, now that looks nice.

Keep them coming.

Pics sure help!!

Just like much of the camo clothes offered nowadays, camo bows are to please the hunters.  The Game doesn't know or care.  Unless it's particularly shiny, no need to do anything with it. The critters won't see it if you don't move it at the wrong time.

Rob.

Nice!

Orion

Yes, I agree.  I am basically wanting it for the aesthetics.  Just so happens my other bow is all black duracoated.  I am trying not to start a trend of owning all black bows.   "[dntthnk]"

Oh Orion...you're no fun!  Camo can be kind of cool...snake skins are camo and they are definitely cool!  When glass gets old and hazed, or limbs are too shiny, paint, tape or skins can personalize your bow, allow you to be crafty, or in the woods make you feel a bit more stealthy.  But I do agree, it certainly is not necessary.  However, when that bull elk is standing 3 yds. from you on a bright sunny day....

I have made limbs look like treebark camo by using or making stencils from thick paper and camo spray paint.

Camo is fun, and it hides stress lines.  ;)

If I wanted to camo a bow, I would seriously consider dipping it. It just looks so neat and well thought out.

I've got a bow heading to Lonnie on Monday and I am struggling over which pattern to go with.  I am enjoying the pics guys.  Much more durable than a home made spray paint job.
