Is this spine good?
« on: January 10, 2010, 01:12:00 AM »
So i have my bow with stings on the way. I have some easton gamegetter shafts that are about 32'' long. the bow i have is about 40 #s at 28". i have about at 29-30 in draw. The arrows are about .400 spine. Do you think this is about right? or atleast a good starting point to see a little consistancy to track my shooting improvement?

Might be a tad stiff. I'd play with point wt. You may be alright depending on how heavy points used. I'm assuming? that you are referring to 2117's or 2412's and with your draw length you should be around 45#. If you leave them full length, you may get by. I used to shoot 2117's out of a 50# longbow but they were a bit stiff.
Heavy points may help. What type of bow?

Its an only bear kodiak magnum recurve. I just want something that i can practice shooting with for a bit. Then if when i get a feel for the bow i may have to look into another bow that fits me better. or if the bow feels right ill narrow down my choices of arrows and make a purchase

Sounds too stiff for a bow roughly 43# to 46# at your draw. What type of bow,a longbow or recurve,FF type string or dacron? You would probalbly have to leave them full and and use a heavier point weight. But also you will wind up with an arrow at 550-575 grs. total weight, thats real heavy for that draw weight.

I wouldn't purchase new arrows until after tinkering around with the ones you already have. Like 3dcoupe says. After trial and error you may find that an arrow closer or a bit above .500 will work better for you. In aluminums probably 2016. Not enough info on your current setup to offer much more help? What shaft are you actually referring to?

I agree that a .500 spine will be closer from the jump but as you bought the .400's, do some fiddling.  Download Stu's Trad Calculator (what a great tool, and a great service to the Trad world to allow free download of it rather than to sell it!).

You might be surprised what you can do by fiddling with BOP length and point weight. I've gotten Carbon Express TH 4560s(.400 area), 2213's(.500 area), 2117's, and 2314's(both .400 area) to tune to well under 1# dynamic spine/draw weight difference of virtually all of my bows by doing this.

For what it's worth, for broadheads I would rather be a touch over spined than under.

Tip:  If you're using screw in points get some 5 grain brass washer weights from 3R for fine tuning.  You can get 2-3 on back of most points with enough thread bite to hold the point on securely...
