How many putting in for NM elk?
« on: January 10, 2010, 05:29:00 PM »
Just wondering how many of you guys are putting in for the NM elk draw. I drew for unit 13 for the first 10 days last year. I'm gonna put in and cross my fingers again, but not real sure what units yet. Had a good time in pretty country, but the unseasonably dry summer had the elk hard to find. Good luck in this years upcoming draw. Chris

Can someone explain to me just how this works? If I'm a non-resident what does one do to apply? Sorry if I interupted your thread ag-pilot. I went out to N.M. 2 years ago and fell in love with the place. Thanks. bentpole>>>>~~~~~>

Well Thank You Mr. J. Adams!       :wavey:      I won't be able to do it this year. Hopefully the following season.             Kids are almost finished with College.        :goldtooth:    David which area would you recommend? I hear Gila is good but what about Charma?

If I draw, I'll be in search of that famous golden New Mexican Whiplash horeshoe.

Do you need preference points, and what unit is a good one to start with?

It's hidden deep in a dark valley Julian, and that's where it will stay   ;)     :D

No NM for me this year - I'm going to try burning up my preference points in WY instead.  Also hope beyond hope that some year the Great State of AZ will bless me with a tag.

No NM for me this year.  Too many other plans and there is no penalty to not apply.  There are no bonus/preference points in NM.

Joe draws all the good tags anyway   :saywhat:

Unit 34 ... I have drawn a tag twice. It is very diverse in terrain types, 10,000 ft mountains around Cloudcroft and 5000 to 6000 around Pinion. I love this place.
The other thing I like is you don't have to pay for the tag unless you draw and everybody has the same odds.

This year you have to pay upfront for your tags.  If you don't draw a tag months later they will refund your card.

The Whipster isn't going to NM so that is a good sign for the rest of us.

I'm all over the place this year about what to try for.  Only thing that is a given is that I will probably hunt CO OTC if I don't draw anything else.  Got a good buddy that loves that trip and I need to do an elk hunt with him some day for more reasons than elk.

The NM money up front change could make things more interesting.

I put in every year. I might not this year because I have a good shot at drawing another state...?

Hunted a private Ranch on the border of units 15 & 13 this year. Been putting in every year since 2000. Drew the tag twice and bought landowner tags twice. Lucky to harvest good bulls every time out with a wheel Bow. This will be my first year with Traditional Equipment. Good Luck to ALL !!!!
