Will I lose much speed if I paint my bow?
« on: January 10, 2010, 11:49:00 PM »
Thinking about a spray can camo job on my bow. Will it affect the bow much?

Might be slower if it is a lot harder to find.

It's pretty much a physical impossibility to add mass to bow limbs without slowing the bow.  The question is how much.  Chances are it's so little you'll not be able to tell in your shooting.

Can't really see it, may have to
go down to 17.2 instead of 17.3 yards    ;)
if you're using lead paint.

In the past decads a lot of people was used to camp paint or socks cover the limbs without any visible effect. The best way could be to really fine tune your bow before and then after the paint job see if the same bare shaft is not become too stiff.

How much paint are you planning to put on it ?

I can't imagine you ever noticing the difference. other than forgetting where you laid the darn bow when nature called.

Almost all of my hunting bows are painted.

Yep, your arrows will fall to your feet.

Just  kidding. I've done it for years without problems. Even use the cloth tape some years and that isn't a problem either.

Hope not, some folks around here are liable to be chasing after you as painting a wood bow ia a violation of some kind.

Post up before and afters, some guys have a knack for being a le to make Krylon look good.  I am not one of them.
Give me a bow a topo and two weeks, and I guarantee I kill two weeks!

It won't slow your bow, but it sure will make it sissy-ugly. Can't imagine why someone would cover up a nice bow with Krylon....but that's just me.

Zradix - Let's put it this way, "If you took Krylon and hosed down your truck, do you think it would make it slower?    :saywhat:

use blackboard paint that way if nothing is happening ya can always draw on ya bow while waiting  :biglaugh:  just kidding. but use blackboard paint as it comes in green black and brown and makes one hell of a camo job and is dull and no shine but be careful when ya put it down as it is had to see belive me i know.

I'm with Rick.  If the limbs are covered with stress lines, I can see painting over them, but to cover a nice bow with camo just gives me the shivers.  It sure doesn't help any in the deer woods so it must be a people thing.

And no....it will not slow down your bow; well, maybe two inches at 100 yards.

I paint mine with black, gray, and green flat paint to get rid of shine. Shine will definitely hurt you in the woods, especially turkey hunting on the ground! For the camo pattern I pick up leaves for stencils and get creative.

My bows are tools, and anything I can do to make them better tools is fair game.

Don't use boat bottom paint.  That WILL slow your bow down.

I used to paint every bow I owned in the 60s/70s but I don't anymore.  I used a product called Bow Dull.  Probably isn't made anymore.

A couple of thick coats of Johnson's Paste Wax and let dry to a dull haze will accomplish the same thing and you can just apply another coat in the spring and shine her up.

If the bow is nothing special it will not affect speed.  If the bow has some really nice wood you will lose about 100 fps.  I don’t know exactly what that is, but ………
