Mike Murphy, T Bar M Outfitters, Durango, CO. 970/259-5469. Mike is a trad bowhunter himself, as is his lead guide and son. He guides everyone (have to make a living) but tries to put together as many all-trad camps as possible each year. Public land, horse-packed camps, great food, honest, competitive prices. He books early so give him a call. Most of his business is return clients and word of mouth, which speaks well. I used to guide for him but am too old now to keep the tough pace he demands. Bring some friends and get your own camp together, or save money on a drop camp. Good luck. Dave

I just moved down to Durango a few months back and this area has plenty of deer and elk.  Sneakypete gave you good info.

I've heard good things about Mike's outfit, too.

Yep, Fred Eichler and company have a good rep around Trinidad and probably one of the best antelope hunts but if I remember right the elk are more of a sideline (course my memory ain't all that good so....)

always nice to know.
“instinctive archery” is more like playing the violin. Without practice you may remember the mechanics, but you will not be a virtuoso.

Aside from Mike Murphy, you might talk to Jake Powell at [email protected]. I've never hunted with or guided for Jake, but I've met him, nice guy, and he's among the most accomplished trad bowhunters in CO, the only person to have taken the "CO grand slam" twice with trad gear. I don't know his availability or prices -- he does a lot of one-on-one hunts -- and specializes in elk and sheep. Perhaps the single best trad guide in the state, if not the world. He's older, but small and will work your butt off. Elk are starting to calve right now. Bulls already in velvet and growing. Dave
