Pau Ferro Widow
« on: January 12, 2010, 12:25:00 PM »
I just spoke with Vernon at BW and he has a PSAX in Pau Ferro.  Does anyone have a pic of a widow using this wood?  Is Pau Ferro the same as Bolivian Rosewood?

Doesn't "Pau Ferro" mean "Iron Wood" in Portuguese? You might want to do a google image search for bows made with either. Sounds pretty.

I did some searching and found a photo of a Pau Ferro PSAX.  The riser on this bow is Pau Ferro, the limbs are Santos Rosewood.

Wow!  That looks nice!

Hmmm...according to Hobbithouse.com, Pau Ferro is Santos Rosewood.  So not really sure what to think.  I am leaning towards Pau Ferro riser on a new Tall Tines I have ordered.

Pau Ferro is a dark wood, some is almost black. Santos Rosewood is much lighter in color.

Tim, How you doing Bro?

I guess Pau Ferro varies as much in color as any other wood. The Tall Tines thread shows a Pau Ferro riser that is pretty light in color, but still very nice looking.

I was thinking of using  a similiar piece of Pau Ferro with Myrtle veneers on the next bow I get.

Here's a pic of a Pau Ferro Firefly we once had, it was gorgeous.  Should make a good choice for a Widow I would think.

Tim, those bow pics are 2 different bows.  I was the original owner of both.  The top bow I hand picked out the Santos Rosewood veneers (from Sauers veneers) at Kalamazoo and Toby matched it with a Pau Ferro riser.  The bottom bow I bought from Black Widow's stock bows and was listed as Bolivian Rosewood.  I'm not sure what the difference is in any of them, but that is what each was called.  All were quite beautiful though...Mike

Danny,

I have a block of Pau Ferro sitting with Brian for when he has the One Piece TallTines perfected.  It is not dark and has some quilting in it and looks a lot like Curly Koa.

Hey Mike, thanks for checking in.  I knew if I posted a few photos the original owner would show!

Vernon at BW said the bow was Pau Ferro which is Bolivian Rosewood. I'm sure if the grain and color of the wood is anything like the two bows you had it will look good!

A widow?! It's very hard to keep up with you. Righty, lefty or double shelf?

The folks on the exotic woods sites that buy and sell the woods think that "Santos Rosewood" and Pau Ferro are the same and actually not a member of the Rosewood family.

I bought a 3x3x24 piece of wood sold as Pau Ferro and it's dark chocolate brown with almost black grain and fades to medium dark brown on one side.. I bought this piece to go with some dark Morado veneers I got from KennyM. I may build a bow with it this spring.

That's just too nice to take out in the woods and scratch up! I'd be afraid of it!
