Need advice from you hog huntin Guru's!
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:54:00 PM »
I will be going to Texas, Savala, last week of Feb. hog hunting with a 5 buddies. Where do I need to place an arrow to the vitals, in relation to a whitetail. Are the vitals highbetween the shoulders? Also would like advice on broadheads. I am using Wensel woodsmans 150gr total and Ace standards 165 and 170  total, razor sharp, flying like darts on my GT's. I am shooting #50 Quinn recurve. we will be stalking, blind hunting and treestand hunting. All feedback welcome.

I like to hit pigs straight up the front leg, side-on. But I shoot pretty heavy gear. Talking to fellows who shoot lighter gear, they like to wait for the pig to quarter away a little, so as to avoid leg bones and shoulder blade. With your set-up, I'd pull-out the 2-bladers if you encounter a big boy, but feel free to use the 3-bladers on the smaller stuff.

I learned a lot about killing hogs on my last hunt....

Low and tight to the front leg is really where you want to be. Quartering away also helps....

If you hit too far back, they'll die, but unless you have a dog, they're very, very hard to find....

Check out how low the spine runs thru the shoulders....

Good stuff Guru.I always try to shoot just above the elbow on a broadside pig. Smaller pigs I shoot a bit more forward.RC

Thanks Curt, looks like the "money" is right above the elbow.

How much does that arrow weigh Sam?  Never a bad thing to go a little heavy when hunting hogs...only because you just never know when you'll have a chance at something like Terry's big boar....nothin
 tougher!
