Art of steel "TRADE POINTS" on primitive arrows
« on: January 19, 2010, 07:33:00 AM »
I made a few primitive arrows in the past with flat steel trade points. Never killed anything with them thought. I'd like to kill a few local coyotes here in Ohio this Feb. and thought I'd give theses blades a real test. My ???? what is Your thoughts on blade design

Shape...thickness ... kind of metal (steel, iron, copper or brass.  I read of copper usage by natives in Wisconsin area.

The blades I made in the past were about 1 1/2 X 1 inch. The ones I see for sale seem way to big.

Also....what do you use to hold them in place. I used sinew a very thin brass wire and work ok!

Do You heat treat them ??? and how ?

Thanks Guys...You have all been so good to this Ol" arraaa flinger

I make trade point the same way I make knife.  Use quality steel, heat treated to the best of my ability for the task at hand and in standard profiles that are proven to be effective.  My last batch were about the profile of a Magnus II and weighed ~170gr.

I am into the the 3 to 1 single left bevel. It is a tradepoint elgrande grizzley copy in left bevel made from a 10in table saw blade. I dont heat treat not sure how to. I have a wet grinder to get my bevels. They are in the 190gr range. I attach with jb weld, and use epoxy over the heft/wrap. Stone not allowed in WY or I would be hunting with stone.

Some hefted some not

They get the job done. Pass thru at 18yds. Just about missed this doe, just behind the heart and just above the sternum. She went about 40yds.

See if I understand your question. The tradepoints I make weigh the same as what I had been using broadhead and target point, so arrow length wasnt an issue for me. The broadhead taper is slotted to except the tradepoint just as a glue on would have slid over the taper. I make my own shafts from boards so I know what my spine needs to be and can sand all shafts to exactly what I need. Once I place the tradepoint in the slot with jb weld, I spin test using a gauge with a straight line at the point. As I spin I watch to see if the tip of the head moves left or right of the center line, and adjust the head until the tip stays pointing at the center line. Then clamp and let dry over night. My home made shafts and tradepoints fly great. A huntig partner of mine razzes me saying my broadhead arrows fly way better than my target arrows, and thats OK with me.

Old York, there are multiple ways you can cut a saw blade. You can cut a saw blade with a Dremal tool with a cut off wheel attachment,A muffler cutter if its not a too ornate shape or as I prefer my plasma cutter.Im shure there are many other ways. Hope this helps.

Do You use anything other than sinew wrap. I used some very thin brass wire once .. it was very strong and just looked so good !    :)  I'll see if I can find it and take a pic to post!

I use a dremmel with cut-off wheels as scottm says above. Then clean up edges and shape with wet grinder before grinding in bevels.

Thanks FerretWYO got a nice buck this year using selfbow homemade shaft and tradepoint, have a guy here in town cleaning it up using beatles. Maybe one of these days I will become a elk guru like you and get one with my set-up. See you Sat for the Triple Crown?

Ah, a plasma cutter!

Can that fit in a small basement?

I'll tell her it's for building gardening tools
or something...  :D

I have some trade points I made out of wide bandsaw blade stock. Bandsaw blade stock works great.

I forge mine from high carbon steel.  Then temper them slightly softer than I would do a knife.  By forging them, you can make them any weight you desire.  Team Tippit broadheads have taken over a dozen different animals  :)

I've made them to be inserted into a carbon shafts:

OR to be halfed onto a wood shafts:
