the Not-so -Superslam Club
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:37:00 AM »
Alright guys, most of us can't afford to hunt all the species required for the Superslam.  So, I had an idea.  We can just go for the Not-so-Superslam.  :bigsmyl:    :archer:
But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. Psalms 3:3

I like the idea.  No hogs or dillos here.  I can see a hunting trip for a hog, but don't know I would spend a lot of time or money on a dillo.  I can see snakes if we had anything of size to use the skin, but a garter or blue racer will not amount to much so no reason to kill one.  Skunk really?    :scared:  I don't know about that one.

I have taken most of the animals on that list but I will never be in the Not-so Superslam club. Sorry but I WILL NOT shoot a skunk with my bow.

I will just have to be satisfied with the Not-so-Not-so-Superslam club.

No skunks, coons or possums but everything else is fair game.Oh yeah we'd get arrested for shooting tweety birds in NY.That fox is a tough one but Im always looking.Whos keeping records?Im already have several registries in the "Pope And None" club for getting skunked by deer the last 2 years so this may help ease the pain some.

eI actually killed 2 skunks 2 weeks ago to make back quivers for my two sons.  Smelly, but they are worth it.

If needed we can take the skunks off.  :saywhat:

Don Thomas had an article in Tradaditional Bowhunter a year or so ago that listed a number of realistically attainable animals to comprize an average person's Slam.  The article was also plagiarized and printed in another magazine so the idea has circulated fairly widely.  Don't have that article in front of me but there might be a few animals listed there that you've left out.  Have fun.

John I think skunks are beautiful and even bought a hide to make a quiver but man I wont dare shoot one.Coons are another,Id like to have a couple pelts but its hard to get a taxidermist to accept one to get the hide tanned since rabies and distemper runs rampant round here from time to time.Keep killing skunks and we can add your to our tally for membership to the Not So Superslam Club. You forgot frogs though.

Well, any term ending with the word "slam" makes me think of professinal wrestling, not hunting. Or, better yet, a Denny's breakfast.  But I digress!  8^).

I would submit to you, that a real archer would do well to have a much tougher challenge, so I will unveil (at a later date) my "Superslam of Roving."  Yes....I know!  It sends shivers down the back of even the hardiest of arrow slingers just to think about it.     :scared:

Yet if we have any sand in our posteriors, we must face the inevitable challenge of the "Superslam of Roving."  And, I will tell you it will not be easy; au contraire, it will be very difficult....physically and mentally taxing.
But....you won't have to buy expensive hunting licenses or use a guide service, so it can be done on the tightest budget (that means cheap).

But again, I digress.  Back to your regularly scheduled program:  Not-so -Superslam Club.

I'll try to keep it to a state slam. All legal game animals in the state you live in. I have one deer, and nothing else so far with the 'curve. I have taken all species in CT with other methods, though. Incl. porcupine, which I didn't kill, but I poked it with a stick so I considered it a trophy.

Just a heads up---most "tweety birds" are songbirds are protected by federal law. It's a game law violation in every state to kill them and the fines can be high, plus loss of hunting priveleges and possible confiscation of weapon. The federal law considers most perching birds as songbirds. If it's not a game bird in season, best bet is to leave it be. See Migratory Bird Act. Songbirds bring joy through song---why kill them?

Yep,  them tweety birds are protected,  Take them and dillo off the list and I can do it.  I just can't see driving to Texas from Washington just to shoot a dillo for a not so slam.

I have been working on the backyard redneck superslam.  Anything legal from my yard.  Whitetail, bunny, coon, yote, squirrel, turkey and bobact(if they open the season next year for my county).  I need the coon, yote and cat!

Seems like deer and hogs really don't belong on a slam list with coons, woodchucks and armadillos. Even a fox or a coyote are pretty tough critters to get with a bow! I guess I like katie's idea of a back yard slam....

Well I'm trying for a crow at this time! The roving slam sounds like a good one, too!

Ground hog, ducks or geese are my others.

Yes, be careful with birds, we had a swan that was shot not far from here. A large reward and prison time, not my idea of fun!

I think the roving slam sounds good.  I already have a pine cone on the list...but then it would be like George to make us all start over and exempt any of our previous conquests.

Starlings, being a non-native imported and invasive species, are legal to shoot in most if not all states and are not federally protected.  Both red and gray fox are getting pretty rare in many places so I'll only shoot one with a camera.  Coyotes on the other hand are fair game under any conditions.  I don't have much need to shoot an armadillo, either.  What do they taste like?

Hey guys, I actually done this as a joke, but I think that it would be really cool to have a running list for the Not-so-Superslam and the Superslam of Roving.  Yotes were supposed to be on the list, I guess I left them off.

Well we can start a running list: Whitetail, yotes, bobcat, hogs, squirrel, turkey, dillo, wabbit, fox, opossum, snake, fish, coon, tweety bird (starling), and skunk.  What do you think, any additions or subtractions?

I have not killed a bobcat, that one will be tough.

I forgot to add the chuck!  I have one lone fox at my place so he stays off the list!

I think you may have  to come up with another list that's a bit more do-able for us West Coast guys...

Kind of like: Mule Deer, Blacktail Deer, Rocky Mtn. and Roosvelt Elk, Cottontail and possibly jack rabbit [they are now protected here in WA], grouse, coyote, Speed Goat, and Bear,  [Cougar and bobcat if your really lucky] The "exotics" like Big Horn sheep, Mountain Goat, and Moose can probably be left off as the Average Bowhunter will probably never see a "Tag" in a lifetime..... OH and as many Wolves as you can Kill by any means.

I know I'm too old to ever accomplish this list, but wish I was still young enough to "Give It a Go"
