Does the burning weaken the arrow at all?

Great looking arrows,I have used this method with good results, sorry I can't post pics.
I have a brass curved template that I bought that allows you to burn on different patterns such as hoof prints and oyher designs. When I used the pattern that allows you to do circular designs I had arrows break at that point, just something to keep in mind.I just free hand patterns now.

Hello Izzy,

the idea about making this antler fletcher just came out of the blue.

But I am definitely not the inventor. I bet you, tools like this must have been invented a long time ago.
Made some wooden ones before, but I do prefer the antler much more.

Guys, what are you using to burn the arrows? I tried it today using a propane torch on a cedar shaft and I now have a crack on the shaft. It seems superficial, but I am concerned about even using it.

Is this going to happen every time? Did I just burn it too close?

Huntress, maybe an alcohol lamp or a candle instead? It should be done with great care to keep from weakening the wood. I wouldn't use the cracked shaft.

Folks, don't try this on sealed shafts, especially with gasket lacquer! It's nitrocelluose, as in gunpowder, and burns like crazy!

Thanks, Don! I plowed ahead, but more carefully, and the rest of the shafts are fine. Next time I will use a heat source that is less intense.

I use our gas kitchen stove forstraightening cane and hardwood shoots for arrows and use it to scorch the wood for a camo effect. I scorch while tempering the shafts after straightening.

Wow, simply beautiful, wish I could do that.♠
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. TGMM ♥
