tracking the Not-so-Superslam (pics on other thread)
« on: January 23, 2010, 05:49:00 PM »
alright guys, do any of yall have ideas for tracking the NSSS? Maybe we can get a spot like the 2010 highlights or some thing.
Moderators, do yall have an idea?
This just seems like it will be too fun to not track and get to see everyone's quests.

Here they are:
 1. Rabbit
 2. Squirrel
 3. Whitetail (or deer species for states without WT)
 4. Turkey
 5. Coyote
 6. Hog
 7. Coon
 8. Ground Squirrel
 9. Fox
10. Fish
But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. Psalms 3:3

How about you just use this thread bud?

Guys can keep updating it like the trail cam thread we have every year.

Your title is perfect for it....

Only thing I would do is edit your post, to add your list...

No grouse? It seems to me that ruffs and blues would be a fine addition to a NSSS list.

Also, I'd substitute deer for whitetail specifically since some us live in blacktail or muley country.

Just a thought.  :)

+1. Never even seen a whitetail. I'm gonna try to get as many of these as I can but probably won't get even half the Nsss

Ground squirrel? You mean chipmunk? Illegal here.

Killie I am not sure on the ground squirrel.. I was confused as well and googled about ground squirrels. Apparently ground squirrel consists of at least five different species of ground squirrel...

A poll was made (not by me) and those animals I listed above "won" for the Not so super slam.  I wrote them down the other day so I could follow along.

Killdeer you might call them gophers in your neck of the woods, I am not sure if there are any ground squirrels in Virginia

I think substituting deer for whitetail is ok. But grouse I think should be left off. As far as I know we don't have any here. At least i've never seen one.

We have red squirrels, fox squirrels and grey squirrels here, and the verboten chipmunks. The Delmarva fox squirrel is protected.

Having tried for years to get a squirrel of any sort with a bow, my getting all three legal species in Virginia would call for renting a hall for the festivities, majorly expensive champagne, bronzing the arrows and free T-shirts from the suppliers of my equipment!

Since it is the Not-So-Super-Slam anyway, I say we shoot for a passing percentage on the list of 10.  I am going to make it easier and be satisfied with a pass/fail system.  I am shooting for a 60%.  My goal includes whitetail, hog, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon and fish.  If I can add a turkey or a coyote to that list I will not be able to stand myself.

We have ground squirrels here in California. They are not chipmunks. They live in the lower elevations, the foothills and in the valley. They live under ground and look like any other squirrel. We do have tree squirrels and fox squirrels and many other varieties but they live in the higher elevations.

They are California’s version of the prairie dog. Ranchers and farmers hate them for the same reasons they hate the prairie dog in the Midwest.

That's true and I tend to agree with you on that. But hogs are on the list and they are by no means found in many parts of country, including the Pacific Northwest where I live. I guess it just shows that it's difficult to come up with a universal list that applies to all regions of the US and Canada.

When I was ten or eleven I made miniature bows and arrows, tiny stuff. I called 'em gopher killers, but they were too small for that. I was living in Palos Verdes at the time, and my best friend and I played in the yard with them.

Fun days.

i was hoping for a near universal list when I started the poll. i could not think of ten species the could be reasonably obtained, so I thought we could all decide.  i see no reason deer could not be there instead of just whitetail.
Ground squirrels just meant chipmunk, gopher, whistle pigs or anything legal of the sort. I can't wait to get started.
Have fun with this TGers.

I agree. I'll just go with Dudley's decision and go for a passing grade. Good luck everyone.
