$2.47 Hot Glue Gun for Inserts!?!? WTH??
« on: January 25, 2010, 02:12:00 PM »
So the other day I went and bought an Easton Epic ST arrow. Stripped the vanes off and didn't want to drive a town over for some Ferrule Tight Hot Melt. I instead went to Hobby Lobby and got a $2.47 Low Temp Glue Gun that had 2 glue sticks with it. I figured this would meet my needs as I test the spine. I could maybe take a few shots and remove the insert and cut if needed. Sounded feasible....right?   :D

Yesterday I got a chance to really test the spine out. I was shooting in an old flat range target in the shape of a Wolf set up against an Oak Tree (going through the target and smacking the tree each time). I'm waiting for this thing to pop out and it just wouldn't! I finally tired out and went to a buddy's house a couple hours later. I gave him my Samick last weekend to get him started. The spine on the shaft was too weak for me, so I gave it to him. Now this arrow is going to get abused! After pulling it out of the fence several times and numerous hits....NOTHING!?!?

Here's the kicker! I got home last night and did the same thing with another arrow (glue wise), shot it a bit. Then later heated the point, pulled on it and the insert came out like greased dog poop! I re-installed it and five minutes later I'm shooting away.

I don't get it? Did I stumble upon the new "Sliced Bread"?

There HAS to be a catch!

I just thought it was kinda' funny.   :)

I've been using the glue sticks for the hot glue guns for years with carbon inserts and they hold better than the old reliable feraltite..I think cause its a more flexible glue and dosn't get brittle..just my thought on it.

Very seldom if ever lose a point when I use adequate amount of glue from glue sticks....I'm pretty liberal with it.....wouldn't use anything else on my carbons.

What kind of glue is it?  I have a gun and about 4 types of glue from Sears.  They all have different compositions and uses.  I will give it a try if I know what to use.  I use hot melt, but if this holds better I am all for it.

Ya I always had to laugh at guys using "celaphane and wax paper" while trying to to tune carbon arrows to hold their points in or cutting the arrow off from the back instead of the front! O well now you all know! I tried to tell every one before but they all knew better.

Geez, bro, have we met?   :smileystooges:

I'm one of those "guys", can't tell ya what a pain in the neck the plastic wrap is to get to work, or how many arrow heads are imbeded in the old teak table I use as a backstop... Also, JB Weld is good for a while then fails. Must be the brittle nature of the dried glue?

Do regular ol' hot-glue-gun sticks work or are we talkin' about a special breed here?

I use the hardware store variety stuff and it holds up for me, twisting points out of stumps and frozen 3D targets. I started using it because I am not near any archery store, and did not want to wait to put together some arrows. I figured I would redo it right later when I put together an order, but they have not failed.
I have the milky translucent kind for dual temp guns (I set the gun on high temp) and the package is labelled "FPC Surebonder All Purpose Stik...conforms to ASTM D-4236."
Well there you are, ALL PURPOSE! Says so right on the package.

I have used the DUAL TEMP since 2006 and the only time My points came off was with arrows that where 3 years old.

That glue seems to hold up good. Now I will re-glue the points on before every season.

This is how I do it on My woodies and also be done the same way with inserts...
Clean the inside of the point/shaft and wood taper/insert, Heat glue and whips it on wood taper/insert. I put on a dab making sure it goes around the taper/insert. I then re-heat the glue on the taper/insert till it starts to bubble and slid on the point/ slid in the insert.

Next I'll heat the point/shaft at the tip and turn the point to make sure the glue has good contact with every part of taper-point/insert-shaft.
