Faster and more accurate Flu-Flu's!!
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:11:00 PM »
Ok to some this may like defeating the purpose, but I've been having squirrels duck my normal flu's faster than a jacked up whitetail.

I was playing around with arrows today and thought to try something different. I wanted more speed while keeping my arrows visible as possible in flight and easy to find after the shot.

I took a full length feather and cut my fletch's at 2 inches. What a difference!!! I still get a very visible arrow and the accuracy went way up along with speed.  I still like my full feather flu's for other things but these new ones are awesome!

Someone else give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Looks like a good idea!  The jackrabbits around my house are gone at the first sound of my flu-flu's hissing through the air, so I may have to give your improvised flu-flu design a whirl.

Arwin,  I've been doing the same thing for a while now except I round the back off so it doesn't touch my face at full draw.  I originally tried it to cut down on the noise but like you I found other advantages as well.
Chasing my kids and my degree for now but come next fall the critters better look out.  ;)

Arwin ,I made a hand full of flu's for my kids the same way.I just used the cut off from mine and cut them in half.Whatever dad has they have to have. That design works great on 1/4 shafts for kids

It's crazy how good these arrows fly!
Those 2 inch Blazer feathers kinda gave me the idea, but never tried it till now. The best part is being able to fletch a few arrows from one full length feather.

I suppose that will help Arwin, but I can tell you that our Pennsylvania squirrels can duck a target arrow, with 2" fletching, from a seventy pound bow.....at six feet.  They get their practice dodging twenty-two bullets.  Good luck with those son.  :saywhat:

:bigsmyl:
BTW I've given up on Judo tips for those critters. The other evening I stalked within 15yds of one, took me 20 minutes. I put a Judo perfectly behind the front leg and all it did was knock it off the branch, this isn't the first time it's happened.      Heavy weighted steel blunts and old broadheads are all I'm going to use anymore.

I now use those 200gr blunts from 3 rivers too. I shot one last weekend that took my judo up the tree with him...He spit the arrow out and went in a hole. Thank God for squirrel season and 3D shoots...I'd never make it to Spring without either of them!

Arwin, side by side, how much farther do the smaller fletch travel than say a 4" fletch?

Thanks;

Wow George, you got some kung foo ninja skwerls over there.

I have gone to three fletch as well.  Mine are a bit longer, but hey, if 2" work I will try it.  I hunted geese a few times, over decoys, and the store bought flu-flu's dang near stopped before they ever GOT to the geese.

Needed to change that.

Alot further, LOL!  Actually I haven't had a chance to get them out int to the woods but testing them at 15 yds I noticed quite a bit of speed and accuracy difference. I imagine they would travel quite a bit further.   ;)

Wow, thanks for sharing Arwin. I've always wished my flu-flu's would go just another few feet, but was too stupid to even think about fixing the issue. I'm gonna try it.

Well once again I agree with George, lol, but seriously if you want the ultimate flu flu just fletch with a standard height standard length feather for the front two thirds. Then make more of a spiral on the final third closest your face. Hard to describe, don't have a pic on this new computer but they work GREAT! You can slow it down by the amount you spiral the final third of the fletch. And whats surprising is HOW LITTLE extra spiral it takes to slow it down. The only downside is they are definately harder to make no doubt about it. But they will shoot as slow or as fast and far as you want but they don't wear out near as quick and you can put them in a bow quiver or back quiver alot easier without any damage!

Lc might have something. In an article by Dennis Kamstra, He mentions a fletch like this. A little quicker, but a little shorter in distance!

Take a 5-51/2" fletch and glue on the front 2/3's, after which you spiral the last 1/3 of the feather by hand and glue and pin down till dry.

I also have seen folks who will put a small spiral feather, behind a normal fletched arrow. Let us know how it works!
