JAN. 27,2010...Hi everyone...I have been asked to do a "build along" from some members here on TradGang.com
So here we go. It starts with me cutting the shaft today here in south eastern Ohio. As you can see its a very nice straight shoot I found in the low land ... swampy area. (the one that starts in middle at bottom of pic) It looks to be around 55-65 # spine.
So I'll let it dry overnight and debark it tomorrow. I usually let the dry for a month or two. If You cut a bunch..... bundle them for drying (see Pic)
I'll debark tomorrow...so check each day now for new info. It will be added here at top of Topic so its easy to see all info I add. I'll put "update" date in TITLE each time I add.
See ya tomorrow for debarking ....Jeff
P.S. I'll have a free drawing here for arrow when its finished !!!!Hope You win it !!! I'll put everyones name into drawing that responds to this topic!
JAN. 28,2010 UPDATE INFO
Ok ..The Red Osier shaft is 32 inches long. I'll keep it as long as I can on this arrow.
First pic is fresh cut shaft. I took off bark with a pocket knife.(2nd pic) Comes off real easy when fresh. If you dry first it will take a little more work ...but its still easy. Get it downd to fresh wood. You can them trim off to profile of shaft where there is a small branch or blemish. If you have a small belt sander it works great! I keep checking straightness too. I then burnished the shaft sufface with a thick shot glass. Gives it a nice finish.
Thats about it for today. Next We will cut out the nock and fit the wood shaft for "stone head" !!!
