Moose's, let's see'em

I was just curious Jerry. They have a pretty cool place out there. They handled a moose and a bear for me, and did nice work.

We stayed at a hotel up town near the old rail depot. The prime rib was fine!

Hey Steve...not sure of Rod's overall career. He's a few years younger than me...didn't smoke on our trip...used about 2 cans of Skoal every day and swallowed 100% of it! Tougher than a spruce knot. A genuine northcountry cowboy. I liked him immensely.

Hey DIY guys that hunted Alaska. How did you deal with all that meat and packing every thing out?

Books have been written on your questions. I could write a post answering this, but it'd take 20 min to read it all. Suffice to say you need a number of skills, and you need to know ahead of time exactly how you're going to 1) butcher, 2) pack, and 3) hang/care for many hundreds of pounds of meat. A plan is needed.

It's extremely hard, tough work.

WOW!! That moose hunting looks like an unbelievable adventure...

If someone didn't want to put in for a draw for years upon years and decided to go to Canada and hunt, what would something like that cost? Is there one province in Canada that is better than others for size of the moose, if so, what is it?

what about Alaska? Do you have to put in for a draw up there? I bet you have to have a guide if you are a non-resident don't you? If so, that would put the cost WAY UP THERE wouldn't it?

Lastly, the pic of that moose walking across the street is Photshopped isn't it? That can't be real.

Thanks for all the pics and stories....really enjoyed them. Now I want to hunt them....

Short clip of a little bull a few weeks after the season a couple Falls ago. Was out looking for a new place to trap & he was alongside the road. He was pretty silly with the rut and let me get close, but if you know moose behavior, you can see at the end he was getting snotty so I shut the camera off & left him alone. :eek:

Jerry once you get it out of the bush, then you are left with another decision, how to freeze it and transport back home. You better prepare for the price of success as well, because cutting and packing will cost you about 0.50 per pound and freezing is extra, then you have to pay for shipping it back. So after packing all the meat out (as much as 700# boned out), often portions of it are given away or traded to help supplement cost of shipping. If you do ship it all back, you need to have freezer space at home as well.

I spent 7 days in NW Ontario last September. Never saw (or heard) a moose but did get about 1000,000 bug bites. Truthfully, except for the bugs, it was a great time with good friends. Saw wolves and bears and caught alot of walleye and pike. But unfortunately, no moose pics.

I am going to start saving my pennies for a moose hunt. Im 42yrs old so maybe in 4-5yrs i could go on one of these dream hunts.

Currently, you do not need a guide to hunt moose in Alaska. They talk about making it mandatory every year, but last I heard it can still be done without a guide.

The moose meat is fantastic and it better be because by the time you get it home it would be cheaper to buy filet mignon!

I actually donated some to a church and was able to claim it's value as a charitable contribution.

I just got back from Elk hunting in Northern Alberta ,and man I sure wished I had a moose tag,we saw lots .In the area we were hunting in the general moose season is a draw ,but elk were over the counter.I'm very tempted to go back next year solely for moose two weeks earlier in the Archery season which is OTC .I grew up on moose meat when I was a kid and even today I crave moose roasts,NONE better and the gravy is to kill for,Hey half a million wolves can't be wrong.In all honesty.The king of animals to hunt AND eat.
Theres a little Italian fella that lurks on here that may be in for a differant treat in the future LOL!

If I could only hunt one animal, it would be the Moose. You can call them in (a lot of fun), You can't believe how tall they are, maybe the best meat to be found and lots of it. BIG JOB though. So what, you get what you pay for.
Newfoundland would be my choice for a Canadian hunt. LOTS of moose and Newfies are the finest kind of people. Quite the accents though, take you about a week to figure out what they're saying! Drive up, long ferry ride across the water, big province, big trip, big fun.
Pick a mid size bull - bit of a rack for the display (still lots of bone to hold) and the better eating variety. My 3 kills have been with a rifle, so no pics here, but the smallest was able to be cut with a fork. The big rack is the most impressive though....
