How to get a shot in the snow?
« on: January 30, 2010, 06:41:00 PM »
As all of you in AR know we had a substantial amount of snow here in White County.  Ever the outdoorsman and hunter I didn't let that stop me from chasing a fine buck I have been seeing lately.

I wrapped up in lots of layers of wool and hit the woods.  I kind of thought that since it rarely snows here in my part of the sunny south hunting in the snow would be educational.  I would be able to track the buck and hopefully get an arrow into him with my longbow.

The snow did indeed help with the tracking but getting a clear shot was impossible.  Had to watch him walk away at a mere 8 yards.

Since snow is such a rarity in my area I was wondering how you folks pull off the shot when the snow is deep like this?

Aim a little lower and a little more to the right of where you think...

And of course, no less then a 400 grain single bevel head mounted on a 150 grain arrow being shot out of an 85# bow will do..

Great picture! Thanks for sharing...

Just jump on him and 'rassle' him down.Looks like in that snow ya might have to come up for air a time or two. Just be a bit cautious where ya jump on him.

Tryin' to rattlin' in a cagey Snow buck is *particularly* challenging - it requires a certain kind of mufflin'  effect on the sound - try practicin' it sometime....

As you can see he was coming right to me.  I still can't figure out how he winded me and turned away.

Just sneak up behind him and plunge a knife into his heart. That'll do it. Or you could strangle him with your bare hands...
