I'm a little over a year from retiring from a career in the fire service. I have dscussed with my wife my dream of Alaska, living in the SE region, hunting and fishing. It is a huge undertaking, and one I am giving a serious amount of consideration and research.
In my years working as a firefighter and paramedic, I have learned one thing for sure, and learned it well. Life is short. Too short to spend it toiling away at a job that, when you leave, they'll forget you in a matter of days, or weeks, and the place will purr right along without you.
My dream is to move to a place I can wake in the morning with a buffet of options outdooors. Camp, fish, hunt, shoot, explore, and see the things I want, when I want, on my terms. To build a small comfortable log home for my wife and I, a good sized boat to fish from, and to transport me to distant hunting areas. I would love to do it in SE Alaska, but I have a couple other spots to research as well.
Kudo's to those to who have forged ahead with thier dreams, and realized them to one extent or another.
I laid to rest a good friend this week, who passed unexpectedly at 42. A man full of life, and a giver in every sense of the word. Life is short, too short to barter with your dreams.
A dream left unpursued is an opportunity lost forever. We too often let lifes day to day distractions and challenges steal them from us.
While I dream of Alaska, if for some reason it doesnt happen, I do have a perfectly acceptable alternative. God willing sometime next year I will hang up my boots and helmet, and start the next chapter. I've been blessed with a good job and a great family. and the ability to dream, and pursue them.
