Fancy Morrison Riser Woods (What combination?)
« on: February 04, 2010, 10:08:00 PM »
I have been on the phone with Bob this week, and am going to place an order for a Shawnee riser in the very near future.  I do know that I want a flare, but would like some help with what type of wood to use?

Any pics are always appreciated.   :D

I am looking for a little black ( Very little on front of riser)  Maybe something very deep red with an orange flare kinda like the Cheyenne on first page of the  website, but not just exactly like it.

There is a picture in the submissions for 2009-10 season of Scott Schultz.  I really like this riser, but have no idea what kind of wood.  Scott if your on here please fill me in.

Do I need the pinecone?  Do I need the Finger Grooves?  Are these just personal asthetics or do they give any shooting value?  Opinions on these options please.

Any side profiles of Shawnee riser's with flare would be greatly aprreciated.

Thanks, Tom

Spurs,
I don't have much to offer regarding the riser woods.  I chose a dymondwood riser because of a color I wanted and it's a tough, reliable wood for a riser.

What I can help with is pine cones.  I wasn't going to get pine cones but added half pine cones before Bob mailed it to me.  At first, it cut into my hand.  Now, I don't like to shoot a bow without them.  It works as a bit of a locator and feels like it keeps the bow from moving in my hand.

Hope this helps.

Phillipine Ebony and Macassar Ebony...

Cocobolo and Macassar Ebony...

Cocobolo and Gaboon Ebony...

And my favorite, Masur Birch and Bocote

I'd also like to get a Bocote with Gaboon Ebony that would look a lot like the one with Cocobolo above...  There are a lot of different combinations and it is really a personal choice, as are the pinecones and finger grooves.  I like the pinecones and dislike the finger grooves, but to each their own there also...

Wood is so personal. There are many beautiful combinations.

I definitely like the pinecones, particularly the "half pinecone". The pinecone is uniquely Morrisonesque and provides a very positive grip on the handle under almost all conditions.

If you get finger grooves, have Bob tell you how to get the grooves put where your fingers actually are. I have a Morrison riser with finger grooves that is nice and feels pretty good in my hand, and it keeps my grip consistent, but it would be a lot better if the grooves corresponded to how I place my long, fairly thin fingers. I personally would not advocate getting grooves because if you ever decide to sell or trade the riser there may be a more limited number of people who want it.

Homebru, I appreciate the opinion.  I live in MS and the humidity is awful in the summer.  If the pine cone might help me hold on to the bow, it probably would be a plus.  I just really can't see putting a rubber grip on one of these risers and covering up the wood unless I absolutely have to.

Bowhunter4life,  I love all of these.  I think the Cocobola with Gaboon Ebony is my favorite.  The Cocobola is definately the red wood that I am looking for.  It really stands out in the sun.

amar911,  You make an excellent point about the finger groves, that if I ever wanted to sell, it might limit the buyers.  I would love to have them though, but was wandering how to get them in the right place.  My fear was ordering a riser that doesn't feel comfortable.  You have answered one of my questions about groove placement.  It seems without being there for Bob to see my hand placement that the task could be disasterous.

Thanks, Tom

Tom, one thing for sure is that whatever you chose Bob will make it a masterpiece.  His cocobolo is superb, which would make a nice flare for the outsides or insides.  I really do like the pinecone(full) carving, but thats just personal preference.

Bocote/Gaboon with finger grovers and Tulip Wood/Gaboon Ebony   Cheyenne "A" risers. I like the finger groves they lay in my hand like a glove.Still regular riser feels great in the hand and shoots great so its a hard choice to pick one.

I have a Tulipwood flare with Purpleheart Cheyenne, very nice, not a fan of the pine cone, prefer without it.

I pass on the pine cone also, not comfortable in my palm when I've had it.

The next riser i order from Bob will have a lot of cocobolo and maybe bocote flare.

I have one of his ILF risers with full pinecones and i had to put a wrap over the cones because it was killing my hand.

Bob has 2 pair of my copperhead skins so i may also get a osage riser with cocobolo flare.

Man if this is all i have to worry about today its going to be one heck of a weekend.

Guys, I really like the Cocobola and Gaboon.  Are these the only two colors that Bob uses or does he put other colors in the front of the grip.  Some  of his risers look two color, and some look multicolor.  I am a definite for coco and Gaboon, but would actually like to add another color.

From what I have read I am probably not going with the pinecone.  Maybe something that I can add later.

Awesome bows guys.  I am really getting excited about ordering one of these.

Yes.  A w/ Low and 1/2 pinecone.
It's funny about the pinecone.  This one eats into my hand, but KentuckyTJ's Cheyenne has the same 1/2 and it's as smooth as my first girlfriends botton and as pleasent to grab.  Don't know if it's wear thing or a diff in the way Bob cuts them?
