New Mexico Ibex
« on: February 05, 2010, 11:20:00 AM »
Has anyone hunted the free range ibex that are in New Mexico? I have been reading about them a lot. They are a cool animal. If you have post some pics and a story.

Cheaper than going to Namibia...

I have heard from quite a few guys the Oryx hunt is an out of hand, less than quality experience.  Bullets flying, trucks flying; crazy!

I've also heard the Ibex hunts are TOUGH.

I wish I could help but I haven't drawn a tag yet, hopefully this year.

The Florida mountains where they live is some rough country. It seems like a really tough hunt with a bow but not too bad with a rifle.

Like BSBD said, the Ibex that live at the top of the Florida mountains are tough to hunt.

I spent many years hunting in the Florida's and can help point you in the right direction if you ever draw a tag.

I looked into the Oryx while I was down there training for my deployment. Wanted to harvest one real bad with a trad bow but, when I found out the cost, it pretty much killed my dreams. I've seen them up close and personal and they are a beautiful animal.

Getting drawn is easier now than before. You have to put the whole $1622 up front before the drawing now. If you get drawn they send you the tag, if not you get your money back. A lot of guys don't want to have their money sitting in NM for a while, so they don't enter like they used to I'm told.

David that is exactly right from what I have been reading. It is just like the wyoming draws are now. I am thinking I may do some scouting in that area and try next year.

Ferret, I camped at Rockhound State Park two years ago, which is a jumping off point for Ibex; talked to a bowhunter who was camped there and was chasing ibex. He told me he was seeing them every day and was close, but had no shots as of then. He had been hunting about a week. I hunted quail in the Floridas that time, but didn't see any ibex. The country is rocky and cactusy (is that a word?) and steep, but not as tough as a lot of country you are used to hunting elk in. It would be a fun hunt if you had the cash.

Randy ... I have a few buddies that did that two years ago, but rifle hunting. I'm going to see them Saturday night at our traditional bowhunters dinner and I'll ask them details.

The Oryx draw is almost impossible to draw. There are better odds if you put in for a badge hunt (you have to be accompanied by a badge from the base) I know some one who qualifies to guide this hunt.

NEW FOR 2010

This for the first time (I think?) there are depredation permits that have been issued to some ranches that border the White Sand Range. These ranches charge 1350 to 1500 for the guide and trespass fee. You still have to buy the 1600 plus license. The best thing about doing it this way is no draw and you have and entire month to use the tag....... Example, if you buy the tag January first it is good all the month of January. If you want details I can steer you in the right direction.
