Thicker piece of leather, with the feather edge tapered.

I think he's wanting to know what people use under the velcro or material so as to build the side plate out further.

I like to use a piece of laether for building out the side plate for tuning. The only bow I have done this on are a couple of recurves because the riser are cut past center.

Velcro and I use different sizes of weed eater string under it to experiment with.

I use a piece of leather or paper match stick...both cut to fit.

And I use velcro only to tune...and calf leather for the strike plate after that.  I have found that velcro can be noisy on the draw with certain arrows.

Thin leather or rubber under a hair plate.  An old bicycle inner tube gives a nice thin rubber.  Clean it well and it glues very solid.

Velcro when shooting off shelf.  I mostly use elevated rests on my recurves.

Just to tune use cardboard off the back of a note book with masking tape.  You can add layers.  When you get the thickness you need you can go to leather or what ever with the correct thickness material or with a toothpick or what ever to get the thickness you want.

I use 2 sided carpet tape under leather when  tuning. Just keep on adding more tape until you get the desired result. Then if you want you can make a nicer sideplate the same thickness.

3r sells a side plate with a build piece to go under it cheap.
