Buying my first arrows...
« on: April 19, 2007, 11:23:00 PM »
OK - heading to get arrows for my new-to-me Border Black Douglas Ultra, 60", 27.5" draw ~53lbs.  I have been reading the heck out of postings and wanted to run this through you guys.

I will get carbons (personal preference).   Prefer the thin Axis or Beamen MFXs.

I read the Dr Ashby reports...and see over 650g is a benchmark - for heavy big game.  I will hunt deer, and possible hogs....but mainly deer.

I am thinking, 29" shafts, 100g inserts, and 125g tips.  With the Axis this puts me just under 500 with the 400s, with the MFX just over 500g with their 400s.

So...
1. Which brand (or does it not matter)
2. IS this the proper spine match up?
3. Is there a way to add (and should I) another 100g to this set-up?  Maybe a heavier BH?  (I like the 125g since I can get them locally all the time - heavier means online ordering - not a show stopper, but if I can do it with 125s I would like to...)

Thanks again,
Matt

Those Mfx classics are hard to beat for durability and looks..You are in the right spine range and there are ways to up point weight They are all I shoot,,I think you are right on track with the bemans with that setup. You may want to start off at 29.5 and work down..There will probably be some very specific posts for you but your starting point looks pretty good..A lot better than my first try!!!

Thanks strick9.  I made the mistake with my compound by relying on a dealer to set me up.  He erred on the light side - and when I put new strings on (which I do every two years or less if I am shooting year round) I was under spined.

One other thought...I am intrigued by the Grizzly arrows...and see that I am on the border between the  Sitka and Alaskan spine wise.  But think if I did go that route I would go for the Alaskan for the weight...

But as you mentioned - I think the MFX may be the way to go...but please keep the thoughts coming!
Cheers,
Matt
