well like has been written on here before. Burn in the garage or outside if you are married or you will never hear the end of it.

I have noticed the hotter the wire gets the closer it gets to the shaft. I guess it expands as it gets hot.

When you are setting up your first ribbon, don't make it and set to to the exact form you want on the arrow.  When the ribbon gets hot, it expands, so if you set it really close when cold, when it heats up it will touch the arrow and scorch it.  Also when turning the arrow, rotate it clock wise into the ribbon.  This stops the falling part of the feather from laying on the unburnt one and trying to burn through two feathers.  Hope this helps

Also you will need to STOP and clean the ribbon if you are burning a lot at one time.

The burned feather stuff builds up on the ribbon.  Just make sure you let it cool first.

The Burner should of had some small square stock that goes into the slot along the ribbon and tightening knob. This supports the ribbon and makes it more rigid. I found some that was longer and it runs along side the ribbon almost touching the shaft. That way a small bump doesn't move the ribbon.

Here is what I do for shield burn cut,I used two different ribbons. The first ribbon I would burn the front to back with a sweep. Then I would change the ribbon and burn the back end of the feather finishing the shield burn.Using two different ribbons I could burn 4" to 5&1/2" shield and I could adjust the height of the shield with two ribbons.I was able to burn many different lengths and heights with two ribbons instead of one ribbon for every feather shape. This is how I did mine.

You can buy new ribbons from 3Rivers. I like to keep a few around to experiment with different shapes.

3RA has a video on their site that shows its use.  GO to the "Den" area and look around.   H

Quite a while back I wrote about how I use mine.  I did a search and found it.  It's on page two of the following thread.

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

I put several wraps of green electrician's (I think that's what it is  ;) ) tape around the shaft directly behind and in front of the feathers to prevent the ribbon from burning my finish.

I never have to clean my ribbon, and it doesn't seem to move when hot vs cold. I think the newer ribbons are better than old. I burn a lot of arrows.

also, at the exact point at which you end the front and back of the feather, you make an extreme bend to keep it away from the finish so you wouldn't need to protect your arrows from the heat.

I agree with overspine, I burn a heck of alot of arrows its all in the set up, like overspine stated sharp bend in front and behind the feather
so it burns off at the vane a little trick take a screwdriver and then roll it over the very front of your feather quill do each one and it tapers and flattens it out you get a very smooth quill too shaft transaction, you will not get a more uniform set of feathers on a shaft then burning in my opinion.

You better burn feathers in your garage or shed or if you are married your wife will throw you and the burner out of the house, get a Little feather chopper no smell.
