Anybody Bowhunting Turkeys with their own Calls?
« on: February 20, 2010, 11:22:00 AM »
Been in the workshop lately whittling on some Scratch Boxes to take to Martys. Definitely going to find an empty pocket to tote one of these in the swamp.Been experimenting with different woods on strikers and such. I know there are a couple of dogs in neighborhood ready for me to go hunting ! anyone else make their own calls?

Yes, I make my own. Just like the one I gave away on here around new years.

Dirtybird, it's not too hard. It's harder makin and tuning my Boat paddle calls but not as easy as makin a mouth call...my scratchboxes are 2 piece. My soundbaord will range from .120 to .100.. I tune to the stick meaning i'll go through about 1-10 striker plates. I favor the scratch box because it's sound is so rich and 99.9% of turkey hunters do not use one..Goggle S and S and Dad's ,they make some nice ones. A cedar box the size of cig packet is perfect.

David....457 arrows give or take 3 or 4!  My wife hates that barrel..i tell her my 30 plus years of bowhuting is in that barrel...she doesn't understand.barrel of memories...

I carved a few double sided Neil Cost style boxes a few years ago.  I have a mahogony and walnut box that i have killed a few birds with.  I wish I had time to care a few more.  Definitely an awesome and rewarding hobby.  I tried carving a longbox, but never made a good one.  Matt

Here's pretty much all the sytle of calls i make. i do not know how many i have made and gave away but i am definitely a student of call making and relish anything I can read about it ,especially regional history of certain calls. Mississippi is rich in call makin history...I love hitting the woods and calling birds up with my own handmade calls. Just brings another level of enjoyment to the hunt.. i encourage everyone to try it one time or another.....

batman, the scratch call with mahagoney sound board has your name on it!!!!!!

GO JOE. Them are some cool boxes. I think I may try to make one for this spring. Now, I just need to figure out how.

nice looking calls Joey. How do you hollow out those box calls? you have sparked my intrest. All I need is another hobby. I got 5 treestands I'm building, two mandolins started, a couple of bows, turkey season is comming up, pigs are on the savanna waiting for me, got Michael and Woods comming in for the St Judes hunt soon, the stippers are tearing it up in the river, my cows are dropping calves like a Tiger Woods sponser, goats are having babies. Hell yeah. I'd love to try and make a few calls. Maybe I can pitch a tent in your yard for a month and cut your grass and cook for your family ,and you can show me how to make calls and bows? All that aside. thanks for the scratch call. I really hope to send you a pic of a boss gobbler that came running in to it. Don

Thanks guys but all you need is a good flat blade pocket knife, fostner bit and drill and maybe a bandsaw I'm obviuosly a Neil Cost follower on the paddle and box. Check on Berryhill and Branton website and they will sell you the chapter on how to build boat paddles.....it's not building them but tuning them is sort dicey...That pine paddle with the compass in it, i off and on scraped on it for 2 years....

Anyone have a preference for soundboard material in a pot call?  I've been looking at buying some supplies and have come across glass and metal soundboards.  Is one generally better than the other?   Thanks...Mike

This is my first attempt to post a photo to TradGang, hope it works...
Joey, this is a box I built copying one I saw in Todd Smith's possesion when we chased turkeys back in 2004. For my money, when it's freshly chalked, it pops better clucks, purrs like a kitten, and makes sexy, raspy yelps.
Problem is, I just never had any luck with it! Hoping to give it another chance in April, tho.
