Mittens?
« on: February 20, 2010, 04:24:00 PM »
Well my season is almost over and it just recently occured to me what I need to keep my shooting hand warm and accesable at the same time.  I need mittens.

sounds kinda weird, but when my hands get cold I make a fist inside my gloves, so I am crunched up in them.  So I thought mittens!

I am looking for actual mittens, not the ones with the flip tops.  They dont work where I hunt, we have a different cold than up north.  It is to your bones cold.  My grandmother is from Canada, and she says it can be 40 below up north and be fine, but the moisture down here is what makes it cold.

Anyway anyone know of a company that makes either wool or fleece, or really any kind of mittens?

When it's really cold here and I'm in a stand or blind, I use military extreme cold weather mittens.  They keep my hands toasty warm and are big enough to slip off easy when needed.

You can pick up a pair for around $40 at a military surplus store.

Here's what they look like:

Chris,

I'm in Michigan where it can get plenty cold. And we get the lovely Lake Michigan wind, lake effect snow and moisture in the NWLP.

May I suggest something that's the best of all worlds, a mitten, with a flip, designed for bowhunters and trad bowhunters to boot! Ask the folks at Gray Wolf and several are trad hunters.
The "slit" is right at your fingertips. Personally, I suggest the XL because the slit is bigger for using a tab or glove vs sticking a release out for compound shooters.

Take a look at these, they will cover anything you'll need.

Why not make your own from a wool blanket?  You can wash and dry it first to shrink it up and it becomes almost like felt or you can use it regular and do either a single layer or a double layer.

If you are interested in something like the woolie-buggers from screaming eagle, you can get basically the same thing at most auto parts stores.  Look for the real sheepskin mitts for scrubbing your car.  Turn 'em inside out and voila! instant shearling wool mittens.  I know, I've got two of them....
Dave

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

Great idea Dave! Never thought of that. I am surrounded by auto stores. I do have the muff set-up from screaming eagle. Very convenient! A bit pricy, but well worth it. And of course I slip in Wallyworlds heat pack.

I have to admit I like Glomits a little better. You can wear your shooting glove under them.

These are from Johnson woolen mills, made up in Johnson,VT.Most people when they try them on say it's like wearing an oven mitt. They're very warm.Their only two downfalls are no waterproof lining and no non slip grip.

You can type in Johnson woolen mills into a search, but I think getting their # and giving them a call would be better,as I've never seen them listed on the site, and the only place I've ever found these locally was at an army-navy store in St.Johnsbury which is clear arcoss the state from me.

I picked up some waterproof sent lock fleece with rubber palms at Cabelas bargain cave. They are not real thick but pretty warm. They are thin enough to still grip the bow well.

I've got a pair of OR (Outdoor Research) fleece mittin liners that I use.  They keep my fingers warm and flexible.  I'll use the shells too (from the same company, OR) when it gets really cold.  The liners were reasonably priced as well.  I believe I got them from Campmore.com a few years ago.

Two Tracks has a wool felt handwarmer that is flamethrower warm.  If you are sitting on a stand, it is the way to go.
