St Judes Okeechobee Hog Hunt - 2010
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:47:00 PM »
Just got home from south Florida and I am unpacking my gear and going through pictures to post.

Marty McMahon's lease is a very special place.

The three things I wanted to accomplish were

1.Do something good for St Judes
2. Hunt some new exciting place
3. Meet some good folks, make some new friends, and maybe shoot a hog

It was a great trip and I'll be sharing the details soon !    :campfire:

Special thanks go out to the guys who made this adventure happen. First and foremost Marty McMahon who has the lease on this special place. Terry Green who joined the hunt and added much flavor to the event. Wayne " Biggie " Hoffman joined us adding a ton of fun. Les Heilakka who did recon and shared some of his stands, many thanks Les. Also joining the fun was Jerry Brumm of Great Northern Bowhunting Co and Marty's son n' law Daniel, fastest hog skinner in the US.

My brother n law lives in West Palm Beach and Marty being the gracious host picked me up at Mark's front door. I flew down from Seattle,WA. Wednesday. The hunt started Thursday evening so Marty picked me up Thursday morning for the two hour drive down to the property. We met Terry at the entry gate. The hunt would start with me on stand at 3:30  :jumper:

The roads in the south Florida wilderness are not like the roads where I come from. This is why you need the marsh buggy. And this is the dry season  :scared:

I found out quickly, and Michael had warned me, these guys like to kid around. And Kevlar isn't a bad idea if you don't have thick skin. Being the new guy in camp I was on my best behavior. I was just there to enjoy the show !

my first game sighted from my stand

All the way driving down to the property and all the way driving to my stand Marty would tell me ... these hogs are tough, these hogs are tough, these hogs are tough.

I was in the stand at 3:30 and my first hog of the hunt came in at 4:30

The wind was right in my face and this old boy was chowing down, but facing right at me. After several minutes he finally turned and quartered away just so slightly. I came to full draw and shot him right where I was looking ... whack and off he ran. The arrow location looked good but there was way more arrow sticking out than I would have liked. THESE HOGS ARE TOUGH   :scared:
