Let's talk Moose
« on: February 24, 2010, 02:50:00 AM »
Is there anywhere in Canada where a couple guys can do a DIY or semi DIY moose hunt or does it have to be with a guide.

I've been trying to do some internet researh on this but have not had any luck yet. Probably not looking in the right place.

We wouldn't mind spending a couple weeks up there getting things sorted out. We've got everything we need for a comfortable camp. Got a canoe, just need some help getting pointed in the right direction.

A semi DIY hunt might just be the ticket if thats possible. Any pointers?

It's my understanding that you need a guide or outfitter to hunt big game in all Canadian provinces.  If that's not the case, I, too, would like to know which provinces allow non-residents to hunt without a guide or outfitter.

The above is an outfitter, that is requirement in Ontario. Hunt must be booked through/with outfitter, guide not mandatory only outfitter. Give them a call.

In Alberta we allow a resident to apply for what is called a Hunter Host license. This allows the resident to accompany 1 non-resident alien hunter for certain big game, including archery season Moose in some WMU's. For more info you can go to albertaregulations.ca, and then of course you must find a willing Albertan.

Most provinces have a similar guide level, but unless you know someone up hear or are real familiar with the area at least book through an outfitter, They can put you on to the animals alot quicker
Eat, drink, and be merry...

No such rules in Ontario. Outfitter mandatory unless you own land then there is an option for non resident land owner.

Here are a couple of other links that would be worth checking out.You can drive to these places and both will work with you to put you into good spots for moose.

David, that is a dandy bull.

keep the info coming. I am working on making this hunt happen this year. That is unless the bottom totally falls out at work.

Because this will be my first moose hunt (just call me "Moose Virgin",), what are some of the do's and don'ts. I pretty much know what bow set up I'll be using along with my arras and broadheads. How about what other gear is a "must have" for the trip. Any and all info from the moose veterans will be appreciated.

I'm heading to Howey Bay Resorts this fall for a moose hunt. they came highly recommended, I will also recommend a DVD by Alex Gouthro about Canada Moose hunting, it really lays it out and jam packed with info. Not a wack em stack em      Video but a tutorial about moose hunting.   :bigsmyl:    just what you need to understand whats going on.

In Manitoba you have to go through a licensed outfitter who has non-resident moose tags.
