I went to a gun show last year and there was a taxidermy show next door. I was amazed at all the diferent animals mouths and noses that were so detailed. It's like you can look right into them. It was strange to see tables of noses and mouthes and skulls.
 Nice one.

The taxidermist is Larry Thomas of Bagdad, KY.  He's an old friend who's been doing my mounts for nearly 30 years.  The guy is always looking for methods to improve his work - despite his extension experience. He saw the better javie mouthsets at a show a few years ago and insisted that I wait on getting ours done until they became available. I have antelope, bear, sheep, and a bunch of deer mounted by him. TJ, once he had the new mouthsets in it took him about 4 months before I got the call to pick them up.

That's awesome.  I have been thinking what I would do if I kill a nice little Javi.  Now I know !  Thanks for sharing.

Gary,it took me a little aback when I saw your post.I am actually the guy that built that mouth. The nose was cast directly from a javelina and the mouth was sculpted using a frozen javelina head, photographs and casts from real javelinas. The whole purpose of the project was to build a very accurate nose and mouth that would save the taxidermist labor. They are not cheap and it shows that your guy isn't afraid to spend money on materials.Since, there have been similar mouths done for bears, mountain lions, elk, pigs and smaller animals.Having an accurate nose/mouth does not assure you of a quality mount. It still takes a lot of skill to put that all together.Your taxidermist has that in droves.Congrats on the javie.

Are you serious Jim?  What a coincidence that your work and my mount ended up on the same website.  That's pretty incredible.  Thanks for coming up with such a quality and much need product!  My taxidermist became excited when he saw the mouthset results, so much so that he agreed to begin doing javelinas again (His whitetails are superb and more or less his specialty).  He was so pleased with the results that he's wanting to hunt one of the prickly little critters so he can have one for his studio wall.

There were actually several people involved in that project. There was an existing jawset and I sculpted the mouth interior, lips, throat etc to make it into a complete, artificial mouth and fit the mouth into an existing mannikin.

It also just dawned on me this morning(I'm a little slow sometimes)that the mannikin itself was sculpted by Denny Behn who built Bighorn bows with Fred Asbell in the early years of that company.Denny,I believe, also helped design some of the Cascade bows. That's a traditional javelina, through and through!

Curt, Larry did two javie mounts, one for me and another for my "Pig Gig" hunting buddies.  The one in the photos belongs to Dan, and mine is already on the wall.  I sent a link to Dan so he could see the comments on his mount, and to tease him some as he lives several hours NE of me in Columbus OH. He can't wait to get back down here to pick it up:^).  We both struck out on this year's hunt, so it was a sweet surprise when we made it home and found out that the mounts from a previous gig were ready. Proof that we sometimes score:^)

Good stuff Gary...I have a Javi I took in 2006 in my freezer that I have yet to mount. Hopefully this summer I'll get to it...I'll put one of Jim's nose/mouth castings to good use

Your taxidermist did a fantastic job.  The anatomical accuracy in the nose, septum, and eyes is great!
