Not to affend anyone  but, this thread is supposed to be about gaining some insight and technique on how to hunt coyotes. The debate that is shaping up has been gone over a thousand times if once and usually ends up getting the thread shut down.

I personally would like to see Jeff's and mines questions addressed. If you have no insight to coyote hunting then please feel free not to respond here. And again, I mean no disrespect, just want to learn something on 'yotes.

I cover alot of miles when I go calling I think they will see a blind as somthing difrent but a coyote new to the area it will work.But just more junk to cary. I some times use a tree stand umbrella on its side.Decoys will some times get them looking away from you.If they are hungry or mad they will come in maybe not close but they will check you out. Theres some good predatore hunting sites ,check them out .Good ones california predator club,Vamint Als,Predator Masters.ect. lots of good info and guys are just like you guys good people.Going to shut up starting to talk too much.

Bow Hunting coyote success is complex when trying to shoot but simple enough otherwise.  

When solo always use an electronic caller.  With two people mouth calling will work.  Do not solely depend on distress calls.  Mix it up and use dominance, lonely coyote, and other calls to get their attention.  Close the deal with the distress calls.

Always use a decoy and preferably a moving one.  Keeps their attention away from you. Put the electronic caller by the decoy but hide it in brush so it is not seen and keep it scent free. Be very aware of the wind and always set up so if the coyote tries to come in down wind they will run into you and you can get a shot.  

Always wear a shaggie suit - top half of a ghillie with burlap strips on front and back of suit.  I like the ones that drop to mid thigh. Be as scent free as possible.  Do not make any noise at the vehicle or walking in that gives you away.  

For calling methods.  I cannot emphasize enough to buy the first four / 5 Randy Anderson Calling All Coyotes Videos.  He does a great job of explaining his calling techniques and my success rate sky rocketed when I started praciticing what he was preaching.  Plus he is a funny guy and the videos are great to watch.  

On shooting ethics.  I don't hesitate to crack a 300 shot on a stalled or running coyote with my rifle. I would definately not hesitate to take a 40 yard shot with a bow. I am out to reduce the population by as many as I can.  Coyotes are not that tough and they breed like crazy around here.  Coyotes terrorize the deer and calf populations in my neck of the woods.  Their population is way out of whack to the prey base.

I think the the tree stand umbrella would be a bad idea for me. We get some good winds crossing the prairie and I don't feel like being dragged!

GMMAT, can you explain to the wardens it is yotes your hunting?? Just wonderin but a serious question! Got to look at the regs for my area cause that is a great idea!

My local warden's a friend of mine.  I'd certainly run it by him, but I'm quite certain he will trust my intentions.  I've never given any of them a reason to think otherwise.

Probably don't hurt I set him up on a "free" lease, this year, either.....lol

Wannabe1-You might try chasing them in the coast range as well as over East, there are tons of yodel dogs on the wet side.  I've seen lots of coyotes working the edges of clear cuts and got a shot at one from a tree stand that was set up on a trail in big timber adjacent to some second growth.    

As for the statement that they aren't very tough, my experience is that they can take a licken' and keep on ticken'.  I made a marginal hit on the one mentioned above, right where I was looking-dead center-likely a liver hit, and he dissapeared into the fern and alder jungle.  When shooting at one, make sure you pick a spot just behind or on the shoulder blade.  Stay well concealed and watch downwind, they almost always come in from downwind when calling.  Get after 'em guys!

I bet a ghillie would work great, SveinD as long as you had something keeping their attention away from you and on whatever it was...like a decoy or something.
