I was on a three day hog hunt in ga(did'nt get a hog lol) and I got my first kill with trad gear, a nice big, pope and young, ARMIDILLO!!! I was so happy! It did not move after I shot it, and lay'd there till dark, but must have crawled down the turtle hole that was right beside where I shot him. I could not reach him in the hole, and was thinking about just buying a mounted one instead? Wanted to see what you guys thought about this.

its personal choice we did a fair amount of mounting shed antlers on heads for guys or guys that found their racks weeks after the shot and the hide was bad.  To me its not really any different than having a reproduction fish done.

  works for me, just make sure it scores about the same.

It is a personal thing, but if your asking then you must question it for you.For me it would mean more if it was the one i harvested. How hard would it be to get another? My personal thought is i would have to put my hand on it to claim it.Again, its only personal,if you have no problem then it wont matter to anyone ether.but your first trad harvest is one you will always remember.

Just my personal feeling. It is not a successful hunt if the animal is not recovered, and that is more important than shooting it in the firstplace.
Why would I want something hanging on the wall reminding me I never earned it?

pokeanhope

Well I live in tn, So there is no way to hunt another one, I wanted to just run down and get it, (what I should have done) but the guide had told me to sit in the stand till I could not see the hand infront of my face, incase hogs come. So at some point in that time after dark is when it moved the 2 feet to the hole and disiperd. I knoe I did not recover it, but It wasent becouse of a bad shot, or bad tracking, just an reachable hiding place lol.   I am asking more I guess would you pay 145buck for a mount becouse it was your first trad kill, or not becouse it was a possum in the half shell.

Man that would be an ugly critter to mount!

If it reminds you of a great hunt then do what feels right.  Personally I like stories better than trophies.

Like everyone else said, there is no right or wrong do what feels right to you.

No I wouldn't. Next time get two and recover them. Then pay 50 BUCKS to shoe maker to mount the dillo heads on the toes of your boots.

tarponnut

Why not?
You made a good shot and would have recovered it had you followed your instincts (and not the guide's advice).

Curveman

I too do not count it as an animal I've taken unless I recover it. Personally, I wouldn't mount anything I didn't take myself.

Mount the arrow and tell the story.
That's the bestest idea so far. If you didn't get him, you didn't get him.

Seems to me that you want to do it. So why not just get it done...no need to ask us really, it's a personal decision...once it's mounted, nobody will know except you and your taxidermist.

But since you asked...no

It must not have been fully dead cause later it crawled down a hole. If it was me, I would not. To each his own.

You keep what you harvest! No harvest, no mount!

I personally wouldn't pay $450 to mount an armadillo if it was a possum in the whole shell.
