First Animal Hit with Recurve while Stumping!
« on: March 09, 2010, 01:40:00 PM »
The weather here in Ohio has finally started to warm up and the snow is melting off, so I figured it was time for some stumping.  So last night I went out stump shooting had a shot at a chipmunk from 18 yards and by gosh I hit him.  I didn't kill him but I have his tail as a trophy.  I will be on the look out for that stub tailed little burger in the months to come He should be easy to spot.    :archer:

Catch and Release archery?  You get the trophy and can shoot him again.  Better yet, he will regrow the tail by then.

Sorry I for one have just never seen the sense in shooting an animal that you were not going to eat.

Oberon...I don't think he thought he'd actually hit him.

Gratuitous pain for entertainment purposes is not high on my list of gotta-dos. I have been taught in the shooting sports never to point  a weapon at something that I do not mean to destroy.

In Virginia, if it is not game or a furbearer, or nuisance species that are permitted by law, we must leave them be. I prefer to kill with a reason for doing so. How we relate to our fellow creations on this earth tells much about us.

I totally agree with Killdeer!!! Show me one member on here that doesnt take that bonus shot at a fox or coyote when it arrives when he/she is on stand! The coyote is the poor mans trophy and i love the wariness of them!!! Never eaten one though!!!

I shoot them all the time.  I don't eat them, but the other critters like them.  They dig all the gravel out from under my driveway and sand under the barn.  They get in everything around my place including chewing their way into the garage.  They are varmints to me.

Good shot!Just because WE don't eat it doesn't mean it's wasted(nothing in nature is).
If I'm ever lucky enough to hit one of those little things, I'll tie flies with some of it's fur and feed the rest to the buzzards.
No offense meant, just my opinion.

I have to agree with tarponnut, nothing is ever wasted in nature.  No need to humanize them, it's a chipmunk.

mnbearbaiter, I am a member that doesn't shoot fox or coyotes just to kill them.  Now if they were causing problems I might but I kind of have a respect for my fellow predators.  I love the wariness of them too.

We used to have a flock of crows around that came into town to clean up the bits of garbage left here and there.  "What!?! garbage left laying around that crows can eat in our perfect Peyton Place? Why I never!!!"  One of those crows did not have any feet, the victim of a fox trap I would guess, he became my buddy. I fed him every day for five years, until the town went on an all out poison, shoot or whatever to eliminate those 30 or so crows.  My buddy disappeared with the rest of them. What is next?  Outlaw bird feeders so we don't have any of those pesky goldfinches and downy wood peckers in town?  Hunting and killing has to have some purpose to be justified.  Merely killing an animal for fun is belligerent. I was asked to shoot some ground squirrels years ago with my bow, because the property owner did not want to use poison.  I shot a couple for them, but I did not feel good about it, so i quit. I think the rest got poisoned and I don't feel good about that either. However, if someone shoots a fur bearing animal to mount its pelt or even to sell the hide, that has some purpose that needs to be considered.

I shot a pine squirrel in Colorado once because he was wearing me out, barking and yelling to me to stop my stalk on the elk he was protecting...I tried my best to eat him but lost him in a hurl that I still feel along with the MRE I tried to blend him into. I went hungry that evening...since then I have not shot anything I didn't want to eat. Even the coyote that gave me a chip shot later that hunt. Having said that, to each his/her own as long as it is not illegal to do so. I got me to police and that's enough.

I like this discussion. I was always tought never shoot it unless you plan to eat it. I shot a sparrow with my bb gun when i was a kid and before i knew it my dad had me plucking feathers and eating it tought me a valuable lesson. However I have a friend that has been trying to get me to go coyote hunting with him for some time. i told him I only kill what i eat and i dont plan on eating coyote. He said he respects that but here in California the coyote population is getting out of control and many of them are starving to death, he feels its more humane and better for the enviroment to put a few down, Im starting to agree with him to a point, but im still stuck on the fence.

I also don't belive in killing something just for the fun of killing something.  There's got to be a reason: I'm going to eat it; I'll use the hide for something (e.g. coyote/fox); or it's a non-native species that shouldn't be there (e.g. feral hog).

Before you shoot a chipmunk for the fun of it, you better check your state's game regs.  Here's what PA says.

All wildlife in Pennsylvania is protected by the Game and Wildlife Code and is classified as follows:
Game Animals: Black bear, cottontail rabbit, elk, squirrels (red, gray, black and fox), snowshoe hare, white-tailed deer and woodchuck (groundhog).
Game Birds: Brant, bobwhite quail, coot, gallinule, geese, grouse, Hungarian partridge, merganser, mourning dove, pheasant, rail, snipe, swan, wild
ducks, wild turkey and woodcock.
Big Game: Bear, elk, white-tailed deer and wild turkey.
Small Game: Game birds and game animals not classified as big game.
Furbearers: Badger, beaver, bobcat, coyote, fisher, mink, muskrat, opossum, otter, pine martin, raccoon, red and gray fox, skunk and weasel.
Protected Mammals: Wild mammals not classified furbearers or game animals (For example: porcupines and chipmunks are protected).
Protected Birds: Wild birds not classified game birds.
