snakewood...thanks for the tip about wrapping with string.  I wouldn't have thought of that, and it made it work,so far.  Did have a couple of bad wrinkles so I resoaked it, then put it on and only wrapped with twine up to the thinnest part of the handle.  Then I just folded the rest of the leather back down, and let it dry a day.
After that I took it back off, resoaked the top half, and wrapped from the narrow part, all the way up to the shelf.  After drying a day it seems to have come out pretty good.
Now I need to cut the fronts.  Should I cut them a liitle short, so the lacing will pull it together?  or just overlap 'em, and make one cut through both sides so that it butts up even?
AND...any tips on the lacing?  Appreciate the help.  Here's what I've got so far...sorry 'bout the blurry pic.

That looks good...yes they do take some monkeying with to get right. cutting the bow back butt joint ..if you cut them flush, when you lace it closed you will get an over lap, thus forming a kinda' ridge..this can be ok as another "locator" on your grip. Otherwise @ 1/16" gap. Use due care at this point...get a good  C/L ....

OKay...finally done with it,,,almost.  The lacing gave me more of a problem than I thought it would.  Ya oughtta use a thinner lace.  Mine ended up bein' thicker than I thought.  It's fine, but next time the lace will be thinner.  The skin I used was pigskin, embossed to look like gator.  Not as strong, not as nice, but it's ok.  Feels real good in the hand. Next time I'll find better skin.
All in all it came out pretty nice.  Really dressed up the bow.  Oh yeah, I put on Copperhead Skineze too.  Nice.....

Whatcha's think ????

Sorry if this question has already been asked but what weight leather works best for bow grips? I notice that leather is usually sold but a number 1 - 9 or so and I assume that relates to the thickness or wieght. Thanks... Dave

I just got my kangaroo leather in the mail, waiting on my punch and cow hide, and then I'm getting to work.  Any more words of advice, please let me know.  Thanks,

Jason

I had to bring this one to the top. Very interesting thread!
