I voted backpack... As this is normally what I carry unless hunting my Catquiver.

My Bison Gear back pack goes every where I go. If I need to spend a night out, all I need is in there. If I kill an elk, I can pack a boned out quarter in the expandable game bag.

Homemade day pack.  It will hold 5 meat bags, scope, TP (most mandatory), 2 quarts water, Jacket, GPS if appropriate, assorted essentials.

Have had several fanny packs and they just don't work for me.

I have to wear a backpack where I hunt. It's too rough and too far back in there to think about dragging a deer out...couldn't get a 4wheeler back in there even if I had one. I have to bone it and pack it out.

During cold weather I have to use the backpack to haul heavy clothes in. I don't care how cold it is in the mornings I'm soaked with sweat even when I only wear one layer of long-johns and bibs. Lot of steep uphill walking.

When I kill something I'll just put whatever I don't need to wear or use in a garbage bag and hide real good, pick up next time in.

I take as little as possible. But were I live and hunt I always have a full pack with me. I carry water,knife,food,rain/snow gear, shelter, wools socks(multi uses)and my possible bag(a dry bag with frist-aid,survival). The system I use took many years to get down to just having the basics. It sounds like alot but it's only a few pounds and worth every pound. It don't take long to get into areas that you may not be found for a long time around here. I have seen blinding heat, snow, rain, wind in same day and sometimes with in the same hour here. I have one of my packs(two sizes) with me even on the short hunts and small game. Big game I usally have to quarter them and a pack is much easier. So you guessed it I'm a pack fan, sorry for rambling so much.

Badland's "Predator" with small water bladder, fills my needs. I add mimimal survival gear, a small commercial first-aid kit, some cording, 4 good game bags, and a combination meat saw, good flash light and spare batteries. Small camera, and spare batteries for GPS and 1 extra space blanket...Very light!

Just about all of the above fits in a seperate comp on bottom of pack with the exception of meat saw and H2O

I usually pack that part before season and just leave it alone until needed.

Leaves plenty of room if I have to start stripping excess clothing, or packing loaded game bags out.

Arrows will ride alongside this year in a Dukier Model S.Tuff quiver.

Twitchstick, I carry about the same gear as you hunting here in Montana. Your weather sounds about the same.

It's said that the weather changes so quickly in Montana, that it is one of the few places:

You can slip on the ice,
Fall in the mud,
and get up and dust yourself off.

I voted for fannypack but it really depends on what kind of hunting I'm out for.  If I'm going to be setting in my stand I'll carry a backpack.  But, since most of my hunting is on the ground I will mostly carry a fannypack.

I use a badlands monster fanny pack for all day hunts and when packing extra gear. but mostly just use a good fanny pack.

I agree with ChuckC what I carry depends on where I'm going and how long I'll be there. Possible bag always(never leave home without it)and a fanny on short or back pack on longer trips.

I either carry a backpack or a fanny pack depending on how much gear I need to lug. I haven't hit the woods with a bow yet, so I'm not sure what I'll use with the bow.

The only thing I carry is my Safari Tuff quiver which has a small comparment. I only put a few items in there and if it won't fit in there it stays in the truck.

I use an other the shoulder bag made of heavy cotton camo material. Have use one of these since the early 70's.

I chose back pack.
For just one pack to do it all I would say my badlands 2800 pack.
I have used the 2800 for bivy hunts up to 4 days and just day hunts. Very comfortable pack and great for hauling out deer!

Depends where I'm hunting.

Bow season 90% of the time finds me in my ladder stand right across the road, about 200 yards from the front door.So I'll grab my bow,a travel mug of coffee, and my cell phone.A deer down means a call to the house, and the old man will come down on the wheeler and load up the deer.I gut my deer at the shop so there's no gut pile in the woods near the house.

The other times that I hunt else where I'll take a fanny pack with the obvious (Knife, camera, food, water, thermos, drag rope, etc).
