aluminum arrow flu flus, what glue?
«
on:
March 11, 2010, 07:52:00 AM »
I'm playing with some old 2413 shafts I have in a box. They are 28" long but I've spliced a couple of inches to make them 30" and with the 2216 inside footing they are quite nice.
I'm going to make some spiral fletched flu flus out of them.
My question is what glue do you use these days on aluminum? It's been nearly 15 yrs since I made an arrow with aluminum shafting.

I use and have for 30 years, Scotch Super Strength glue. I lightly sand the area to be fletched with an up and down sanding motion, clean with rubbing alcohol and fletch.

Fletch tite works the best on aluminums.

K, I guess I'll try the fletchtite again. I had poor results when I tried to repair some aluminums last year for a guy using the platinum.

Mike, I always used Duco on alum arrows but that was many years ago. Fletch tape should work fine. A friend was making flu-flus last week(on wood) and spiraled the tape on the shaft first then laid down the feather. Said he had better control than adding the tape to the feather first.

I've had good luck with Loctite gel superglue. Just make sure the shafts are clean and oil-free.

Gateway Feathers has just come out with a new glue called G-1 just introduced at the ATA show. Thicker (no-drip), faster drying (40-60 sec), and less odor than their previous Fast Fletch glue. I have not tried any yet, but is sounds great on paper. Can anybody add personal experience to this?

A lot of these glues work well. I use Fletchtite and Superglue with great success. The biggest key is cleaning with denatured alcohol.

I've just recently made some spiral flu flu's out of mismatched aluminums I had. I just simply used some plastic clamps and AAE FastSet Glue and that seemed to work just fine. I've shot them all stumping and whatnot and had no issues with fletch to date.

Howdy Mike…
For a long time I’ve made the majority of my flu flu’s with spliced aluminum shafts…it gives shortened arrows a second life. I use epoxy to make the splice (arrow in second pic) and Fletch-Tite for the feathers. The only time I do not use Fletch-Tite is with woods that have a finish other than lacquer. Enjoy, Rick.

I had some Easton CA in the drawer so I used it and made one up.
It really stops. At grouse in tree angles it only goes 30 yds down range. Cool!!
Into the wind only about 10 yds.

With my Easton Legacy shafts I use Fletching Tape. Never an issue for me. Fast and neat.

I heard "contact cement" is the go-er on Spiral Wraps. Check True Flight web site.

Mike, I've shot aluminium arrows for almost 40 years. I too have had trouble with fletch tite glue and changed to fletch tape.It is super and takes alot of punishment to get even a piece of the fletch to come off. Ben
