I think you messed up big time. Seems you started out trying to make moccassins and ended up with Mukluks!! LOL

I think they are great. We made those in school as a craft in Alaska. We doubled up the sole for wear resistance and padding and the seams were laced with leather like what you have for laces.

They should be quiet for stalking.

Great moccs!

I got sucked in by the tittle but I think these look great!
I'm just curious to know what kind of traction you get.
I've walked up some steep hills in leather soled shoes and discovered they were to slick for me to stand upright.
Now, I glue on a layer of powdered/ground up rubber tire mixed with barge cement.
(I like to build it up about 1/4" thick)
it helps with grip & traction as well as being water resistant.

Chris,
Here are pics of winter mocs sewn inside out with elkhide.  They have felt liners and rubber booties.  I imagine sewing hair on you'd have to do some trimming around the edges first.

Here are the pair for my son and me from 1980 summer mocs.  Kind of shapeless without feet in them.  I use a flip flop bottom for cushion as I have tender feet.

Good luck and keep sewing.

I have definitely seen fancier moccascins, but I wouldn't call them ugly.  There's something specially about using stuff that you've made yourself on your hunts.  Way to go Chris.

That's pretty good work, for a first try. You should have seen my first pair of mocs.

I'm new here, but I have made several pairs of mocs, using light buckskin to heavy moose and buffalo, made from the pattern the page at the link. The moose and buffalo leather was bought, BTW.

    http://www.southernindiandept.org/mocpattern.htm

An outer sole, reaching about 3/4" up the side of the moc, was  glued on with a generous amount of rubber cement, then stitched on around the edges.

The rubber cement provides a nearly water proof sole, in most weather.

I have found that walking in mocs requires a different style of walking. Short choppy steps, especially when walking up hill or down hill, will prevent most falls, even in mud or wet leaves.

wow red dodge, that is amazing!  I so wish I had decided what I was gonna do with the hide BEFORE I started tanning it, lol.  Then I would have definatly taken the hair off.  These are definatly a "trial" pair, but I will still use them, at least during the summer for groundhogs, lol.  But I defiantly want to go at it again, without the hair.

I make 'em like reddogge mostly.  Above is a sideseam moc I  made right after my daughter was born in January... it's mate hasn't been started.  I wanted a light weight moc for the warm months with a few extras.  Heavy chap leather lined with a light leather, another leather midsole and a water barrier should make for nice walking.

My hightop winter mocs will have wool liners and are going to be made out of a real nice chap leather... I tested it by putting a puddle of water on it and letting it sit for 10 minutes... after that the leather hadn't absorbed any of it - and that was w/o treating it!
