So I ended up in Basalt co - 20 miles from aspen yesterday afternoon...thought I would try some flyfishing in these famous rivers here....
The Fryingpan and the Roaring Fork..Never fished here so I went into a local flyshop here " TAYLOR CREEK FLY SHOP" that was recommended by Danny Clum at RMS.
If you ever come through here lookk these guys up - they have guides etc.
The guys were great...but the midges the use....crap are you kidding me LOL.
size 20....what are you going to catch with that...hmmm.
well I take this fly and try and tie it one to my USUAL 8 pound test...NO GO FOR SURE.
I am used to using a 4 - 5 inch woollybugger and catching a 6 inch grayling or bigger.
Well when in ROME. So I tie on some 5x tippet (smallest I had).
go out the back of there shop and proceed to cast this out there...WHAMMMM...fish on (exicitement happening in my chest)....oops fish gone...
I have never caught a brown trout...so I keep fishing lost another one....then some kids came by and threw a bunch of rocks in the river (NICE).
So I jump in the car and head out of town a ways. Back in the river...check over a likely spot.....this huge fish rolls in front of me..WOW.
SO I go down stream cross the river and sneak up on him. I toss this tiny little midge..nothin. NADA.
a couple of more casts...nothing...so I switch to a bitchcreek nymph....WHAM.....big hit a tug and GONSOLONZO.
NOW THIS IS THE WEIRD THING....i look down at my rod and it has brown specks all over it. It was windy and a light rain....about 50 degrees.
then it just keeps getting browner...my coat is covered too. I am in a friggin MUDD STORM....MUDD you made it to CO bud.
I go back to the car - IT WAS LATE - this is what I found
Time to get a motel room. I talk with the locals and they say the winds from the west take the dust into the upper atmosphere and then when it rains it make MUD...WIERD.
SO I wake up to this:
4 inches of semi-wet snow - mud frozen on the G8...not a good combo....anyway I am off to the car wash and then the river for another go.
THen back to Denver to see the boyz at RMS and then off to texas tomorrow.
Been a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat trip so far though.
Glad I can share it with you all...
