arrow set up
« on: April 03, 2010, 02:06:00 PM »
I have 12 xx75 2018 arrows uncut. 6 with 4" fletching and 6 with 5" fletching. I have 20.9 gr inserts and 150 gr 4 blade stingers. I'm shooting a 58"psa widow @ 49# and have a 60" psa @ 48# on order. My dl is 28". Is that enough weight up front with my arrows cut at 29". If not, How would you set them up. >>>>RAY

A 29" 2018 with 150 gr. point will put you close to 550 grs.,I would strip one bare and do some bareshaft shooting. After starting full length and then trim alittle at a time until I achieved the correct dynamic spine I'm looking for.Are you RH? If you are and the bareshaft is nock left that is a weak spine.Trim alittle off and keep shooting the bareshaft until it get almost straight but slightly nock left and then shoot a fletched shaft and see if you are grouping together.I let my bareshaft tuning dictate the final length of my arrow. If you get shorter then your 29" length you may need to go up a spine or you could build out the side plate alittle. This is how I tune arrows for my bows.

Go to bowmaker.net and read the tuning information. It's good. You basically start out close, like 10-15 yds and as your flight improves, move back as far as your groups will let you.The object is to have the bare shafts impacting right with the fletched.A stiff, bare shaft will impact left of fletched(if you are a right handed shooter)and it will impact right if it is too weak. After you get it shooting good, you double check everything, shooting broadheads. You may have to fine tune a little with them. The main goal is to get practice arrows and broadheads impacting together.

Reducing shaft length will stiffen the arrow, increasing point weight will weaken it.Reducing point weight will stiffen the arrow.

It may be different for you and your setup, but when I shoot 29" 2018's out of a 50# and a 55# bow,I need 270 grs on the front end, combined point and insert weight,to get proper flight. You may need something different. It helps to have a variety of screw on points to try.I don't believe you will need any that are lighter than you have.

For me I start out at about 10 yds to make sure I'll hit the target and do alittle tuning there. And then I'll move back to 20 yds and finish my tuning.

I cut a new shaft at 30" and screwed on a 125gr field point. ( i have nothing heavier ). Shot 3 times at 10 yds. The arrow hit in the center but nock left. I went back to 18 yards and the arrow hit center and about 2" nock left. I have room to shorten as much as 1.5" for my 28" dl. I need to get this arrow stiff enough for 150gr up front. A friend thinks he has some 5gr weight washers and a 145 gr field tip for me but I won't get them untill monday.
