Animal urine on my favorite hunting duffle
« on: April 07, 2010, 07:05:00 PM »
One of my household pets went to the bathroom (urinated) on my XL Filson duffle, which has been my hunting bag since 1993. I'm not too keen on dropping $350 for another one, so I've hung it in the garage and been spraying it with Nature's Miracle spray. Usually this stuff eats the odor right up when we use it in the house but I have yet to put a dent in the smell on this expensive and well used duffle.

Any ideas on how to treat Filson canvas or is this one going in the trash pile? I'd definitely don't want to pack hunting gear in it, or would I be covering my human scent?

That last bit was a joke.

Seriously what should I do?

Can't you put it into a washtub of hot water and detergent and soak and agitate it for a good while?  Then hang it out in the fresh air for a week.

Filson is really adamant about NOT washing or drycleaning or even spot treating with cold water! Damn!

I'll call them tomorrow but I'm afraid this one's gone to the cats........

Unless you can't stand the smell yourself, with so many feral cats in the woods now, I doubt the animals your going after would pay that much attention to what ordor remains after hanging outside for awhile.

Before I threw it away I would go to the car wash. It no longer belongs to Filson it belongs to you. I would do what I want with it. Gary

I'm with sagebrush.  If you are throwing it out anyway then you might as well experiment.  You never know.

This might sound silly to some of you...but I had a similar problem with my hunting coat a few years ago. Dumb cat.
Anyway, try laying it out on your lawn directly on the green grass. I know...I know...I thought the same thing when my wise old mother told me to do it. But I did it anyway, and after two days, it was basically scent free. She said it was a trick she learned from an old lady farmer in Missouri about the time I was born....

Not sure what happens, but I imagine it has something to do with the gas that is produced through photosynthesis.

Did you try any brand name scent killing sprays?

I would imagine it's kinda like skunk.  If you've ever hit one with a car, the odor goes away, eventually, until it rains.  Then it's back again.  Most vet's offices have a skunk deoderizer they sell.  Country folk will tell you to use tomato juice to get rid of the skunk smell.  The worst that could happen is that you will have to replace your duffle, which is a distinct possibility already.

Tomato juice will kill skunk odor, may be worth a try. It's the acid, I think.

Tom cat pee is one of the worst, it really lingers. I had some leather boots that took YEARS to quit smelling. That green grass cure sounds like chlorophyll might be the active compound - pills and chewing gum of the stuff are supposed to suppress breath odor - maybe you can dissolve some pills or get liquid and use it to deodorize.

Best cure for skunk smelled dogs is Summers Eve brand of douche (applied externally to the affected area) - gun dog trainers swear by it.

As for the tom cat, they never stop spraying once the start. One word... blunt.

Take the bag to the laundry-mat. Turn it inside out and put it into one of the big front loading washers. Use regular Tide powder soap and hot wash cycle and put the spurs to 'er. When done, Hang the bag outside for several days, especially if it's been raining. Leave it out til it drys well and the little bit of soap smell is gone. Top it off with a spray of scent killer. Worked on my blankets and hunting gear sprayed by a Gnarly tom cat. What do you have to loose?

A canvas bag that you aren't even suppose to spot treat with cold water, and all for just $350. Who would have ever thunk it?

Throw out the cat.  Keep the bag.       The scent will dissipate over time, particularly if you air it out and do the grass treatment.

Been there, done that, target practice with the  miscreant so it doesn't do it again and get another bag.  That Cat smell always comes back.  By the way I do think the cat pee would cover your scent quite a bit.  Skunk seems to be the only thing stronger.
