they love the water and are very good swimmers!
a mate and i went barramundi fishing on a tidal part of a river on sunday. now, tidal means that there could be crocs up to 16'-18'long! after we were done fishing we headed back to the barge landing to take the boat out and go home. so you can imagine our amazement when we came around a bend in the river and saw a buffalo emerge from the water. he was completely submerged, getting some relief from the buffalo flies, mozzies and sandflies. the salt water probably does him good for ticks too. two horns and a head just appeared from nowhere! i quickly got my camera setup for what would be a great chance for some good photos, because i knew he wasn't going anywhere fast, being low tide and nothing but bottomless mud bank on both sides of the river.
we got in close and he tried to escape up the mud bank but he realised it was way too deep for him. the poor thing was stressing out and working hard pushing through the mud so after some close up pics we backed out and gave him some room. he decided to come back down into the water and swim across to the other side. we cruised in again and got a few more shots then we let him be. we were expecting a croc attack at any moment but nothing happened. after seeing him in the mud i'm truly impressed by how strong these animals are.
i hope you enjoy the pics.
