Tried a New Finish...really like it.
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:01:00 AM »
I finished this bow using conversion varnish. I recently had some trouble with some catalyzed urethane...and I'll never go back now...LOVE this stuff.
50@28  Carbon back, belly, riser... I sure like how the carbon dampens things...well, except for the speed... :0)

What type of wood is that in the riser and where do you get your carbon for your limbs?

Trinity Coatings...I think Sherwin Williams is supposed to be just as good or better.

Cocobolo, hickory, maple.

I get the carbon layed up custom from an aerospace supplier...

Nice finish. What brand of conversion varnish is that? What was your finishing process? Thanks.

That Hickory one was actually the first with the CV... I was sold right off the bat. Keep an eye on the limbs Bill to see if the finish ever starts cracking...??

Well...I would bet it was my doing, but it started peeling/flaking on me. One day I had a customer shooting a trial bow..I looked at it and saw a little pale patch...I hit it with my fingernail and I could just chase the bubble all around the riser...Entire finish peeled off..

One thing about the cat urethane is that its sort of a plastic that goes on the outside of the wood...the varnish actually soaks in and bonds a little better..????

I know of some top notch bowyers that LOVE that Cat Urethane... Just watch it to make sure that doesn't happen to you.

Ernie

Thanks

I tried some conversion finish (Fast Drying Polyurethane)from Kwik Kleen.  Have to work with it some more.  I was not at all satisfied with the result, but I think it was mostly because I sprayed it too dry so it didn't flow out well.  I love how it dries fast like a lacquer.  In my one experience, it did crack where my bow has a bit of a hinge.  After sanding off my poor attempt at finishing, I took the bow to the local bump shop and had it finished with automotive clear coat.  Looks great and it hasn't cracked any.  I do intend to try the conversion finish again, though.  Oh, the main reason for this was to say that it didn't seem that expensive when I bought it.  Can't remember the price, but I remember the shipping cost almost doubled it, so I'm guessing it was arount $10 a quart.  Here's a link

Awesome bows!    I love the CV also, the only problems I have had is the CV finish crackling on the backside of a recurve (in the middle of the working area.) This was the only problem I had so far. The fella had it for some time and he took it from a (simi) warm area to 20 degree temp and on draw it started to crackle.

Again I love your bows, super job!
