String stretch and brace height
« on: April 17, 2010, 08:15:00 PM »
My new string continues to stretch.  I strung it up about two weeks ago and I'm about to twist it for the fourth time to get to my brace height.  Is this normal or is the string doing something strange.  I have been shooting pretty much every day and notice that the bow starts to twang a little,,, check the brace height and see that it needs adjusting.  Thanks for the help
Josh
Also the bow is 71#s at 28,, I shouldn't need a special string should I?

If you're running a dacron string it will stretch considerably...I've had them gain 2" of length after putting them on a string stretcher.FF materials usually gain 1/2" to 1".

yep, dacron will stretch, recoil, stretch back again, an almost endless (er, flemish?   :D  ) vicious cycle?  anyhoo, i've been trialing the new bcy b55 and it sure appears to stretch/creep less than b50/b500.  might wanna try that, if ya wanna stick with dacron.

When I twist a new string, I usually brace the bow, and apply pressure to the limbtips to stretch the string initially, and then leave it strung overnight. It shouldn't stretch more than that. Sounds like you may have a faulty string, it certainly sounds excessive to me.

You'll need more strands than if you were shooting 50#, for a comparable amount of stretch/creep.

How much stretch/creep you get depends on a lot of things--how the string was made, the material, the number of strands used, temperature, etc. etc. etc.

My guess is, in your case, any number of the following could be the cause:  string wasn't pre-stretched, it's made from dacron, it has 14 or less strands (dacron), it has 10 or less strands (most HMPE materials).  You said it's new, and new strings generally require some shooting in, but not that much.

What Chad said!!!!  I run a number of bow at 70# in both B50 and D97, I do not have that problem.  Sounds like more of an issue of construction rather than materials.  H
