Testors paint ?
« on: April 26, 2010, 07:15:00 PM »
I'm making some woodies up and have my shafts stained and crested now. My last step is dipping the shafts in the poly. If I dip the arrows in the poly will the Testors paint run?

I use spray on water based poly, and never have a problem. Just make sure you let the cresting dry overnight.

Hey A.S. how it going? This is a water based poly but plan on dipping the shafts and not spraying, will this work as well?

I use the enamel Testors and water based sealer too. I apply mine with foam brush so I can't speak to it running if dipped.

Never had it run but it did crackle up on me one time when I got in a hurry and did not let the testors dry for a few days. I have since switched to testors acrylics which are water based and ditched my enamel testors. Testors enamels can be troublesome with other products.

I had some problems with testers using poly spray  even though I left it over night. I waited 24 hrs. with the next batch and it was OK.

Interesting, I've sprayed poly over testers with just a few hours dry time and no trouble. I buy the Minwax polycrylic in the can and then use one of the Preval sprayers to spray it on. I find I get a nice uniform coating much thinner than the dip...and coat a few times with drying time in between. So far, it's worked out very well for me. No runs, no drips, no errors....what a minute, wrong paint.

Richard, I'm doing great. I'm building my boy a new string for his bow today. He's crazy in love with shooting it!!

I use the Minwax Polycrylic as well, and never have a problem.

Good luck with it,

Allen

If you use Testors enamels, which are a petroleum based product, you can apply a water based poly directly over the cresting. I only wait an hour after the last coat of Testors, then apply the water based poly.
If you use a petroleum based poly over the cresting, it will run no matter how long you wait. They have the same thinner.
