My 2010 turkey season has simply been great. I have pretty much gotten to hunt just about every day at least some. This season I have learned a ton, and its not over. My daughter still has a tag to fill and I might get to take a friends kid this weekend.
Things I have learned this season.
1. Hunt where there are turkeys
2. Have really good decoys
3. Set your decoys really close
4. Don't be afraid to call frequently
5. If one place you hunt is 15 acres and there are 7 cows running on it put a fence around your blind if you are going to leave it up.
6. I find it easier to hit the right spot if I can get the toms out of strut.
My set up this year was a primos jake decoy, the one were you can move the fan up and down by pulling a string and a Dave Smith hen decoy. If I was in a blind I place the decoys around 4 yards from the blind. If no blind, they were no further than 15 yards.
I would like to introduce you to Steve and Sally. Steve is my weak looking jake and Sally is my sexy looking hen. Steve has had a rough season. He has been beat up twice, pushed around once, and had a load of No. 5 shot in his rear. Steve and Sally have brought in 5 toms and 2 jakes that won't see Memorial Day. I can't post pics of all the turkeys because I was the only one to get my two with a bow.
With Steve and Sally I have had strutting toms so close I could see them blinking their eyes.
