Rolltide, I came up with a 21% FOC arrow for my Pronghorn to take pig hunting last Feb.  I was shooting a 54 lb at 26" Pronghorn TD longbow.  I used a 28" BOP Sitka Spruce shaft with a 50 grain led insert in the front and a 190 gr VPA Terminator.  Total arrow weight was 620 grains and FOC computed to 21.6%.  It's performance on the pig was excellent.

I've shot some 700 gr arrows and decided that was more than I wanted or needed.  A 250 grain head would have put me right there, tho.

I'd need to know a little more about your bow, mostly how deep the shelf is cut and the type of bow, to make a spine recommendation.  The more of the weight you can keep up front the higher the FOC and the more spine you will need.  The one thing to remember, is that perfect arrow flight will trump all the arrow weight and FOC when it comes to penetration.   :readit:

I would not go much past 650 grains with your bow that should be the bone breaking threshold.  Anything over that and your throwing away arrow speed for not much gain.  I would look at working with carbon shafts to optimize your FOC.  You will find that you need a much lower spine than expected when you have a super high FOC.  I have some 30 inch 600 spines with almost 400 grains up front that weigh 584 grains with high 20% + FOC.  With the arrows lengths you will use you just might be able to achieve higher than 30% foc which will really improve penetration.

I would definately look at putting your weight up front and keeping the shafts as light as possible.  Don't listen to any local archery shops about you arrow shaft spine to start with.  Almost none of them have a clue about FOC and how to set it up.  Keep checking in here and asking questions.  Lots of guys are playing with FOC and have a good understanding of how to set it up.

It took me 6 months and a lot of arrows to get it straight.  I got some really bad advice from my local compound archery shop.  Brock at Bull Mountain Archery helped set me straight.  That and the Ashby Reports and chatting here.

I posted at your other location.

Correct... but what is nice is the high FOC goes a long way to tuning an arrow.  It does more to stabilize and steer.  Leave the rear of the arrow out of the steering as much as possible.

Speaking of FOC tuning:

Here's one for ya.
I hand loaded an arrow for my Black Widow recurve being 71@31. At that particular time the arrow was 32 in., 830 gr., 32.3% FOC. It flew perfectly out of my bow. At a recent 3D shoot it was shot out of two other bows as well for fun.

The other two Black Widow bows shot with me at the Spring Fling 3D shoot at Tannehill.
One of the bows was a SAX 49@30 and a PLIII 65@30. I shot MY arrow out of the PL. It shot absolutely perfect..a little slower... but perfect.
The other guy shot MY arrow out of his SAX and  immediately he said he wanted every detail of how I built that arrow because it shot perfectly out of his bow as well.
70ish, 65 and 49 lbs. shot perfectly with same Ultra-FOC arrow.
I am not sure how that happened.  It was really amazing to us as we watched that occur.

Try This... Log onto "Stu Millers Archery Dynamic Spine Calculator". It did wonders for my set ups and arrow flight.

I'm pretty new to this too. But what I can tell you is this. Look at my sig. The 2018 arrows coming out of my 51# bow, will get the best TPI at 680 grains. They do not benefit being any heavier. At 680, they will have 310 grains up front and an FOC of 21.1% according to Stu's calculator. The 2018 is a "too heavy" spine for my draw weight, but with more weight up front, they spine down.

That being said, they are in test, and I'm still shooting for flight. I might end up around there, but so far, I'm doing okay. When I started with the 2018's, they were about 533 grains.

My suggestion is to get Stu's Calculator, and punch in some values to play around with.

John, It looks like I may bring my whole family to HH shoot this year.  That's good because the red bugs will be spread thin on more youngins.

Rolltide, For a BW Recurve, I add 15 lb, so in your case that would be 68 lb for a 28" arrow and a 125 gr point.  You will be better off with a little extra spine rather than less, so I would recommend a 70-74 spine.  Just for grins, I ran the numbers thru Stu Miller's spine calc and it told me 74 lb.  If you are shooting a hard string and /or heavier points, you will want to up the spine.  For the 190 gr point I would add 10 lb.  If you really want to nail it down, I have some test arrows you can use.

There are some good heads in the 190-200 class: the Grizzly ElGrande, VPA Terminator and the Ace Super Express to name a few.  I have the Terminator in 250 gr, too.

I shoot 57@27 out of my PSA III and I just tuned GT's 5575's 28 3/4 loaded with 250 up front and they fly great. I put a brass insert, footed with 1 1/2" then 125g tip. Haven't neasured FOC yet but your only a few pounds away.
