Musta been a horse thief
« on: May 06, 2010, 02:57:00 PM »
You guys ever seen this before? This is in Wisconsin, found this gobbler quite a few years ago and came across the pictures. I thought I would share.

As you can see, he was hung by his neck all that way up in the tree.

That is very strange. Never saw that before. Perhaps a gun hunter shot him on the roost and he got hung up. Lightning strike? Maybe just a heart attack. This might be an interesting thread.

Perhaps we're overthinking this?  I can certainly imagine the turkey distraught over getting older, not having enough 'product' to keep the balding spots from getting bigger, losing those oh so good looking hens to a younger, stronger Tom...maybe he felt it was just time to throw in the towel before a mean hunter did it for him?

Sorry, couldn't resist   :)

I'm betting he glided right into the fork of that branch and got hung up.  They aren't the most graceful in flight!

Turkeys crash and burn as often as any other critter that flies. I have seen a few tangled in grapevine and virginia creeper vines. We had a hen on our hunting property for years that wore a tangle of bailing twine.

Just like deer getting hung up in fences or bucks bound up with each other, or in tree branches. Life is tough, regaurdless of what Disney says in the movies.

I raise wild eastern turkeys and have seen some strange things.
I came home once and a jake was hanging on my front porch,we had a bamboo blind up and the bird somehow got the string around his neck and foot.
And everytime he kicked his leg it strangeled him...well quess what he strangled himself and it was harder to do that than just stop and let the string slide off his foot.
Needless to say they aren't the smartest animals around.
Im sure this bird done something as equally stupid.

He was trying to impress the hens by doing some chin-ups. Hard to do without thumbs and all.

That is one of the craziest things that I had seen. The other toms must have strung him up when they found out that he had been rustling their hens. It just goes to show you that they don't take kindly to hen thieves.
