Tagged out in CT!
« on: May 10, 2010, 11:18:00 AM »
Well I did it, today I took my 3rd and final bird in CT and caught it on film! We had birds on all side of us in the distance this morning at flydown. I knew we were in a good spot. I called every so often as the birds slowly made their way to us. Around 6:15 I heard a gobble really close and made a few soft calls, next thing I knew he was spitting and drumming right next to the blind, so close in fact that his wings touched it! He came out in front in full strut and faced off with my jake decoy, getting between him and the hen deke. He never broke strut and I took him right in the "bullseye" as he faced straight away at less than 3yds! He ran a few yds and fell, then took flight and crashed a short distance away!
We still had birds coming in and I was tagged out, so my buddy grabbed his recurve and we switched positions. As we did this a hen we didn't see, saw or heard us and started alarm putting before finally leaving taking a jake and longbeard with her. 10 Minutes later we called in 2 more longbeards but they hung up in front of us at 20yds and my buddy has just recently started shooting trad again, so he wasn't comfortable with the distance. They finally left and we were able to go get my bird......what an awesome morning!

A triple on longbeards is quite a feat-congratulations.

Thanks everyone. What a season this has been, I managed to fill my 3 CT tags and 1 NY tag and still have 20 days left. I have been lucky enough to get permission on some killer private property. My CT property is 60+ acres with no pressure and there is not supposed to be anyone on the land to 2 sides of it(watershed property) There are a ton of birds here and i am lucky enough to be able to hunt anyday because of my work hours. My prime NY property is only 11 acres but there are quite a few birds there and some but very little pressure anywhere in the area. i have a few other decent spots in NY if the birds disapear.

I've been using the same set up all season, my "old" super shrew(autunm grey), 58" 49@28, I used flat black cloth tape on the limbs for in the blind, 570 grain(total) MFX 400 with 100 grain insert and 175 grain VPA Terminators.

How're you liking those VPA Terminators, Greg?

I love them. Super strong and easy to sharpen on my water stones, they get very sharp and hold an edge. Way stronger than the snuffers or woodsman
